Is telling people their goal should be to help others and not just themselves controversial now?
Ehhh thats just the kind of rabble rousing most commencement speakers give TBH. its all about helping people and doing the global work, not the individual self. Ive been to about 5 Graduations, and its all the same spiel. No one actually listens to it.
The guy that gave GSUs commencement speech was a 28 year old kid who was co-founder of FACEBOOK. He sat there talking about work.........and I LOLed, kid youre 28 and his estimated net worth is 500 million. What the fuck does he know about working? He created something that made him millions. Good for him, but hardly the norm. Thought it was funny.
But in general, thats kind of the theme of most graduations, you achieve individually but graduate as a collective, with various degrees of study, so its more of a "GO FORTH AND BETTER THE WORLD" type deal. It would be really shitty if he said "FUCK EVERYONE ELSE, GO GET DAT MONEY, DOLLA DOLLA BILLZ YALL"

Obama tells Moorehouse graduates there's more to life than the pursuit of unimaginable wealth and conservatives manage to find something wrong with that message. LMAO.
Good job, America. This is what you've reduced political discourse to. ANYTHING Obama says is unequivocally wrong.
Who said "unimaginable wealth" ?
I want people to do whatever makes them happy, whether it be retiring early, having a lot of money, being a public servant, owning a business... ect ect ect.....
Its you who thinks everyone should fit your mold and cater to your ideology.
From now own, anyone who says some kinda BS about people only going into business for money, Im going to immediately follow it with this quote from Obama:
"The most successful CEOs I know didn’t start out intent just on making money — rather, they had a vision of how their product or service would change things, and the money followed,”
Yeah. No money following in the oil industry. None.

Or if your calling in life is to fight for lower taxes and more civil liberties for americans...... in that case, the IRS follows.....
or maybe you want to be a member of the press and make your government more transparent to the public...... in that case, the DOJ follows
Liberals - Fighting for your freedom to chose to do exactly what they want you to do!
Another raging liberal has returned to the politics section...... just in time too...... blankcd has been getting beat like a pinata for weeks, he needed someone to give him a breather.
I agree with Vteckidd... Most commencement speeches are full of pap anyway. I see nothing inherently wrong with Obama saying what he said.
Never seen anyone have a U-haul truck behind a Hurst. At the end, what good does wealth do you? Making money isn't evil, nor is dedicating your life to a cause you believe in...
They don't have to be mutually exclusive, and depending on how it's earned (ie: not robbing, stealing or lying to get it). Neither is wrong.
It's my goal to die broke... Not leave my kids with any debt, but die broke. I made my way, I expect my children to do no less.
Just my 2 cents.
Who would've thought.
Is this true ?
Go rape women and murder cripples if that's what your heart desires but do you really think no one should tell you that certain goals aren't admirable?
The president stated, “No one expects you to take a vow of poverty. But I will say it betrays a poverty of ambition if all you think about is what goods you can buy instead of what good you can do.” As others have pointed out, this is about as plain vanilla of a commencement speech as you will ever see. How is this worthy of discussion in any form?

Exactly right. This is how all presidents do it. Press conferences, speeches, etc. are all largely scripted. Obama is not unique in this respect. If only Rick Perry had a teleprompter, he might have been able to remember which three government agencies he wanted to dissolve.
Yep, tools only serve the purpose of the person using the tool. In this case, the teleprompter is much more dangerous than any firearm ever made. With a gun you can gain control over someone with the threat of force..... Obama's teleprompter has manipulated millions into voluntarily surrendering control over their own lives.
