i live in barrow and that is not so. oconee county hits you when the speed limit goes down to 55 at hwy 78 near athens. i see more gwinnett county cops than i do barrow on 316. look out for braselton on 85, esp if your not white. everythime i see them the have blacks/latino's pulled over and search their cars like crazy, i usually screw with them when i see this because it's real bad in that town and i hope somebody sues them for it.

i dont think this law is a bad idea but shit 75 on a two lane rd. and 85 on the interstate. that dont make since. i will admit that my speed limit on the interstate is normally 85mph. i know thats speeding and if i get pulled over, i just go pay the ticket. no bitching and whinning, i was speeding and thats my fault. i think the interstate super speeder limit should be around 95mph because going that fast is just stupid. i dont think 85mph is a outragous speed for the interstate. just my opionion.

seriously go to braselton off 85 and check it out yourself. i'm white so it does not affect me but thats what i see 99.9% of the time there. i have been pulled over at 3am by braselton a couple of years ago and was not searched at all and my eyes were bloodshot from playing video games with a friend out a chateau elan. also it's funny that when i went to get my girlfriends accident report in september there were nothing but latino's in line to pay fines, and there were at least 8 ppl in line with tickets. it's small town BS. try pendergrass GA too, they are abt the same.

If you believe that speed isn't a contributing factor in accidents, you are confused. Unless a car is parked and a Piano falls on it, speed is most ALWAYS an issue. Most people are going too fast for them to react. Whether someone pulls out in front of them, whether they rear end someone....whatever. If you hit someone, 99% of the time someone fucked up somewhere by going too fast for whatever situation they were in.

Failure to judge other person's path or speed was the most common cause, just saying.

speeding by itself is NOT the issue that causes "most" accidents its carelessness and just being a poor driver that causes accidents and fatalities. stricter driver's education should be more of a solution. To me this is almost another tax for driving.

I drive 80mph on most highways in atlanta just to keep up in the fast lane and not piss everyone off around me, but maybe I might have to pass someone to get off at an exit in time. Ill be doing 90mph to pass out of the fast lane.

What if the cars next to me have no gap and passing is my viable choice? The point is a simple occurrence like this that happens to almost everyone everyday that does a significant amount of driving will now cost you $200 and if you don't have the money, than a suspended license...which will then put you in the system so they can gather even more money in "driving courses" and court costs.

















wait....I have changed my mind, I like this law for that very reason. shitty drivers will now finally be penalized for their shitty driving and forced off the roads (especially if your broke) and if they still continue to drive than they will be jailed....either way they will no longer bother me on my commute!

I think they should up the speed some because 85 is a bit low considering most of the time I have ever driven either down 75 to FL or up 85 to Greenville, my average cruising speed is 85-90 with other cars in front and behind me and even though I am only 21 and have only had close to 7 years of driving experience I do have many miles under my belt doing these trips and have had no issues. If you pay attention to the road and what is going on around you and up ahead of you you can be a much safer driver even at higher speeds.

I think you are a lot more flawed than you think I am. I think you're starting to tap into what I was getting at, but not thinking too much on it. I don't see where the faster you drive, the better your reaction time. Your reaction time should remain constant at any speed on the road. Not varying miles per hour. If someone else hits you and you're driving 85mph, the wreck will probably be a lot more sever than if you were driving 70mph.

They should put stricter laws on those using cell phones and other distractions also that make people unsafe drivers. Hell people cant even direct a damn plane because of cell phones lol.

Yah obviously at a slower speed you cover less space and thus can get out of a situation better, but if I was talking on my cell phone also and didn't notice a car up ahead of me and wasn't paying attention to what they were doing then I'd have a much greater chance of getting in a wreck.

Atleast we can all agree on they should change the speed some in different areas.

I have had my set of speeding tickets back towards the end of HS and after dishing out some serious cash I realized it was stupid to be doing triple digits on a regular basis.

Taking it to the track is the best way to get it out of your system.

Speed can be a factor. That's the point. Talking on a cell phone can be a factor. Anything has the potential to be a factor. There will never be less distractions. And yes if someone is on a cell phone and they drift over, your speed will become a MAJOR factor in how the rest of that transpires. If you're going slower, you'll have a much better chance at getting out of the way. If you have to jerk your car out of the way of someone at 80+ mph, you're going got have a harder time controlling your car than at much lower speeds. As far as people driving and talking/texting, hail yeah that should be a huge penalty. And I'm not talking about drivers being more or less aware when speeding. I'm talking about reactions and cause/effect situations.

Thats a lot. Last year with working half the year and doing school while living on campus the rest, I put over 36k on my car. Was having a competition with my friend to see who can keep the least mileage but I am putting over 2k on each month now to and from work in Alpharetta. Im losing by about 20k now and I was ahead of him. :( Not many more trips to FL either since my Grandmother is now up here in GA, but her health is dwindling fast.

Sounds like a stretch, but maybe funding should be put into opening more tracks in various parts of the state. I headed up a track day at Talladega with 12 other friends and we had a blast for 1 day of tracking. You get all your speed giggles out on the track and have no need to do it anymore.

Maybe if they opened more tracks and people got their speed racing out of them on a closed circuit it would help.

I also think they should change some of their criteria as to how hard it is to get a license. There are those that should put down distractions and drive and theyd be ok and then there are those that shouldn't be allowed behind a wheel period.

Like today I watch some chick in her nice BMW 5 series almost rear end a semi in the left turn lane because she was fumbling with her phone. Also when I watch taxi drivers I wonder if they even have a license with the way they drive. Taxi drivers scare the shit out of me and I avoid them at all costs (that is here in the Marietta area). Never know when they may turn right in front of you as if you dont exist. Watching how other people drive and what they are doing shows a lot what talking on a cell phone or eating can do to your driving.

I want to know where this money goes also. Was sorta interesting to see where $1300 of my money went a few years back when I did some stupid stuff. Wonder which fund the extra $200 goes into.

Dont care too much for the law, but I do 65-70 on the interstate so I dont worry about it too much. Why waste extra gas to get you a few feet farther down the road.

Yah after doing only 60-70 to Alabama and back I was able to get over 28mpg. I got 437miles off of about 15.5 gallons. My rated mileage for my car is 18 city -24 highway. Around town it is doesn't hurt to go slower, but on road trips it does make up time to cruise at a slightly faster speed.

I honestly don't care about it either way. They know creating this law, its not going to stop 99% of people who drive fast. Sure, some will stop and some who get caught will probably stop, but majority of the people are going to keep on going with life as if it has not been brought up. So basically after while, I believe it going to just die down slowly.

It doesn't bother me mearly because I never drive 75mph or over on a two lane road. I mean, thats just retarted and shows you obvisouly do not care for your car at all. You could easily hit a dog, person, another car, etc. I usually stay in the 55-to-60mph range on two lane roads. Plenty fast enough and I never even come to close to accidents because I plenty time to spot certain things and slow down. On the highway, I usually stay within 80-to-85mph. Usually the flow of traffic and its plenty fast enough to get you were you're going. Although I'm a very young driver, I do not treat ever trip somewhere as a race.

Again, in my 14 years of driving I can think of a single time that I NEEDED to go 20 MPH over the posted limit. That was when I was bringing someone to the emergency room. Unless you have a situation similiar, there is no need to go that fast.

Well that's not right, either, lolol. LEOs aren't the ones that set the fine amount. They just write down the speed limit and the miles per hour being traveled by the offender. The ONLY thing they can do is not write down the correct speed o the speeder. Later, QD.

Fines are already over $200 to $300's especially in Fulton, so just add a few more I guess. My only problem is it won't slow down the speeders. People drive what they are comfortable driving based on the conditions. Every morning going 285 east, everyone is going 85mph in the fast lane. Even after this law has passed. I never see any cops on 285 east in the morning except by the peachtree ind exit. So people know when to slow down. I speed but I am usually within the limits of the law so it doesn't affect me. But for all you people that are praising Sonny for a job well done, I say BS simply because people are going to drive how they want. Try again. There are just as much idiots on the road that don't speed. But to be honest I am more peeved about the damn GDOT. Ever since the Olympics, our Highways and Roadways haven't been able to keep up with population. Every where you go there is traffic at 5pm. A mass transit system thats a joke, bicycle lanes(joke), carpool system, is there such a thing here in atlanta.
