We are definitely moving towards a euro style socialism.
IMO it is a direct consequence of all of the handouts and social programs. The more you give for free, the more people will depend on that instead of themselves.
Why do we have police when we can own guns and defend ourselves?? Firefighters?? I could buy a fire extinguisher you know. No need to tax me on that.

Privatized firefighting can be a tremendously profitable industry. History tells us that the richest man in the history of the world, Marcus Linicus Crassus was the owner of a firefighting company. He he got word a building was burning, he would pay its owner pennies on the dollar for the structure, and then fight the fire the Roman way... collapsing the building to prevent the spread of the fire.

There is a need for govt. But the #1 problem we have right now is that the Govt DOESNT FEAR THE PEOPLE. The govt is trying to HOOK the people on entitlements.
Look at Healthcare, people get angry and all of the sudden its over Obamas RACE or its angry right wing conservatives spreading propaganda. When in reality the Dems dont even have enough support to pass this thing.
Healthcare was the first thing that got people pissed off and say wait a second, you listen to ME.

Socialism is "spreading the wealth" like Obama says we should do. It is raising taxes on successful people in order to give additional handouts to people that would rather smoke weed and have babies than get a job and support themselves.
Socialism is mandating that you have to pay for healthcare or you pay a fine. What ever happened to personal choice? Get sick and don't have health insurance? I guess you have some debt to pay off. It is not the govt's job to mandate what a private company sells to its customers.
Btw, the car insurance requiremnt is not a valid comparison. Having a vehicle is a choice you make, insurance is simply a requirement if you choose to make use of that privalege.
It all comes back to fear for the conservatives, doesn't it? Obama was elected by a wide majority of the American people, as were the democrats in Congress. You might not like Nancy Pelosi, but the voters in her district keep sending her back to DC.
And as far as the anti healthcare reform movement, its just a bunch of hogwash supported by Fox News and the special interests/insurance companies. 60 plus and other "advocacy groups" are really just front organizations that serve their parent corporations.
I have news for you, all countries in the EU are free-market economies. Yes there is more government regulation/programs than here. Still free-market economies. Even if Obama's health care thing passes, the US is still far as hell from socialism. Don't call it white or black if its grey.

We are nowhere near the European countries when it comes to "Oh NOES!!11!! SOCIALISM!!11!". For example, this pic comes to us from Denmark... where taxes on sports cars are so high that the people who can purchase such vehicles resort to ridiculous modifications like this to make them "work trucks" and avoid taxes.
Once it gets to this point, I'll be concerned.
Facism and socialism are completely incompatable systems. I don't see how we can be moving towards both. Also FYI, socialism is an economic system, not a system of government.
It seems people are very confused about what socialism is. What you listed is not socialism. Actually, things like taxing the rich more is anti-socialist because socialism is based on egalitarianism and thus all people should be treated equally. Additionally, socialism states that people should be paid according to the work they do (where all necessary work is treated equally), so it is not about giving handouts and simply "spreading the wealth".
I am not trying to insult anyone but it seems very few people know what socialism even is. It has just become a buzzword for anything people see as anti-free market.

1.) How can Obama be a muslim, an atheist, the anti-christ, and a member of Rev. Wright's church? Some of those are mutually exclusive.
2.) How can Obama be both Russian communist and a Nazi fascist? Ever heard of the Eastern Front?
3.) The connection of Obama + Czars = communism is fail. In Russia the communists came into power when they killed the Tsar Nicholas II. The Tsars were absolute monarchs, not communists.

This is why I use the term euro style socialism, not just socialism. Industry still owns the means of production, but the massive levels of govt control lend itself towards socialism.
Now look at this country.
Massive govt intervention into the automotive industry. Basicly forcing us to buy cars we dont really want using the CAFE standards. The Euros and japs are far more adapt at building the cars that meet those standards without losing their styling. This is why the US automakers are constantly losing more and more market share to them.
Massive govt intervention into the banking industry. Govt mandates and regulations from the CRA directly led to the housing boom and collapse. That collapse led to collapses in every other economic sector. Without the CRA, lending standards would not have been lowered. Without the CRA, the bailouts would not have been needed.
Proposed govt intervention in healthcare. Just look at Baucus' bill. Govt mandates on pricing, plan details, and who they can and cannot insure. And on top of that, raising taxes on the insurance companies and indirectly, their customers.
How are any of these things not socialist in nature, if not their actual form?

I agree with you that goverment is already too involved in many industries and I am generally for smaller government. However, I believe goverment does have some important roles so I refuse to make a blanket statement like all government growth is bad. And I very much refuse that big government = socialism. Although most forms of socialism require a large government, there are quite a few large government systems that would not support socialism. The two are not synonymous.
I'm pretty sure he talks about God sometimes, just like televangelists Joel Osteen and Pat Robertson. The message isn't necessarily about God, but its still delivered in the same manner as a religious service, and religion is the common denominator among those who are involved. I will hand it to you that my opinion of what does/doesn't constitute "church" doesn't count for much given that I'm an atheist and have a cynical view of religion in general.
