The federal reserve is not under control of the US government. Which poses threat issues to them.
I for one wanted ron paul to be president, but was censored during political debates, which didn't let him demonstrate any of his political views and what he wanted to do for the government (which was less government).
A lot of people have been wanting the Fed to be audited, but has not been due to the lack of power to rule against those, i.e. big money. There are millions of dollars not accounted for, but appear to show up during scandals.
If the audit were to happen we would be in such a better state of mind for the public.
