Default Air conditioning temperature control problem in 94 civic EX

I have a bit of an issue..First things first, the AC compressor DOES work, that is a known fact..Cold AC was never a problem, however, now that it's getting colder,I tried to push the temperature lever to the heat side, but it goes right back to the cold side once the lever is let go..Where is the device that controls the temperature located? Is it under the hood, behind the actual interface of the AC,or what? I just want to switch the temperature for heat to get through the winter.Any help would be greatly appreciated.
