Default how to check if A/C compressor in working condition?

the A/C compressor in my car is not working/spinning and it broke the belt.
i'm looking to buy a USED compressor. Is there a way to determine if a compressor i'm purchasing is in working conditions without installing it?
this is for a 95 integra LS.

had the same thing happen to me in my sunfire, and it caused the car not to have enough power to turn over.. i thought i was stranded until i turned the ac off, lol. if you dont know anyone personally that you can buy it from, i would get it off ebay.some of them come with a 6-12 month warranty, and are fairly inexpensive.
but to answer your question i believe the clutch has to engage in order to tell if the compressor is locked up or not.
