Coilovers/Lowering Springs

Hey yall, Ive got a 93 240sx. Ive been looking at all kinds of suspension junk and 1200 bucks for coilovers is definatly not in my price range. Ive seen some el cheapo coilovers on ebay for like 90 bucks shipped. Yes I know they may suck compared to everything else but I was figuring, they are better than nothing? Or I could get some Tien <spelling? lowering springs for like 100. I would like the coilovers just so I could adjust the ride height and from what I was told is dont drift without coilovers. What would yall suggest? Considering I would just be doing light drifting nothing competition wise.

if you want coilover get some ground controls, there like 366. But dont get any from ebay. I had got some off ebay when I had my 240, the damn things lower my car less than a inch without the fuckin sleeves on. Or get some eibach sportline springs, they cost about 221 with a 2in drop all around!

Still not in my price range. Im talking 100-150 is all I have to spend on the suspension. Its a very low budget project. So... good lowering springs or cheap coilovers...?

Tien isnt cheap shit. Its nice at least what ive heard. Its basicly either Tien lowering springs or offbrand coilovers.

Don't go with just Tein springs, your ride will suck. The stock (and old) dampening will not be up to the task. Save closer to 3-400 and do a strut/spring combo.

drifting? oh help us. but on the topic. i would save your money till you could atleast by shocks and springs. i got some megan coil-overs and they are great but i would not just buy springs all you are going to get is a shitty ride (due to the worn out shocks)

More than likely it is because they are too soft. What are the spring rates? I am guessing tha these are sleeve type and not full assembly since you said eBay.

Id like a decent ride and lower it decently. Im not looking into high performance crazy shit . I honestly considered cutting the springs. Yes I am stupid my friend yelled at me for about 10 min straight about how bad of an idea that is. I would like to lower it to improve the handleing and ride. But at the same time have a good ride and Id rather not have the car articulating like crazy when Im being an idiot and putting it sideways. If the car is articulating too much Ill scrape up the bumpers and undercarraige. As I learned from rock crawling in my truck, that is bad. Clutch lines are not your friend when articulating lol. Long story.

BUT: Offbrand Ebay coilovers.... or.... Tien lowering springs. Both are about 100 bucks and thats all I can afford. Dont bash what it is just tell me whats a safter, more logical idea and what would be better in the long run. Thanks yall

If you are wanting to be SILLY go ahead and get the springs, your probably going to hate it in the long run becuase it was $100 bucks spent on a half ass job. the shitty coilovers is a real bad Idea becuase the sring rate could be really bad. now if you want to drift and not end up in a ditch somewhere down the road, save your money, and do the spring strut combo. you will hate waiting for it but, love it when you sideways around turns. and in complete control.

really man just be patient, and trust me I'm one of the most impatient people in teh world, but it will be worth it.

The Tein S-Tech Springs are basically for looks only (the SPRINGS, not the coilover dampeners!), there's a reason why they are under $150 new....basically for show cars. I don't get there reasoning behind selling them except strictly for profit because people will buy it just for the name. If you can put them on a quality shock then they may be sufficient for average driving.

I'm not promoting "coil-over" sleeves in anyways but there is nothing wrong with them, even the eBay version...it's a threaded piece of aluminum tubing and an aluminum perch (big nuts)...they are basically all the same. It's the quality of the spring you put on it and most importantly the quality of the shock you put it on that matters.

There is absolutely no use in putting on new springs if you don't plan on upgrading the shocks too.

you'll do nothing for your suspension by spending $150 on it other than make your car ride like shit and look a little lower. the ebay coilovers *can* work ok, as long as they're paired with shocks that can handle the extra stiffness and shorter stroke that you'll give when you drop the car down a couple inches. putting the coilovers on stock shocks will blow them in short order (unless you keep a relatively stock ride height, even then the stockers don't have enough dampening to control the springs). tein springs will do about the same when you're using stock shocks.

you could drift on stock suspension as easily as you could with a horribly mismatched shock/spring combo on the car. but then again if you can only spend $100-$150 on suspension then you can't afford drifting (legally).

ew... if you can't afford quality stuff, why not just save up? I know you're excited to get new stuff on the car but comng from someone who's been through it, it's just better to save up and learn more... because as soon as you get the stuff on you're gonna read/hear about some other better stuff you should've gotten, then you're gonna sell what you have and take a big loss on it...read different forums like and you'll pick up alot and also gives you time to actually learn your car before you go out and make changes just becaues so and so magazine does it or so and so drifter does it.

Speedminded is exactly right about the S-Techs, they are too soft and too low to be a performance spring I can only get them to be responsive when I over-dampen them a bit. If I was on stock struts I would be living on the bumpstops.

i would vote a good strut/ spring combo. Ask around for some of the common strut/ spring rate combos for your car and style of driving. talk to people that actually know what they are talking abot. Erin posted above, i would talk to him. he seems extremly knowledgable and has an S13 also, not to mention he is a great driver. Maybe there are some 240 boards somwhere that some tech savy people can help u out? but it sounds like ur budget doesnt allow for suspension worth buying, tires, fuel ect. Tires are always your best upgrade when it comes to unsprung upgrades. GL

OMG, you can't drift without JDM coilovers!!! What are you thinking? They're made in Japan for a reason, just like your car. For DRIFTING!!! If you get some ebay or even americn made crap, you won't be able to drift at all. Your car will have lots of understeer and oversteer, and you won't be able to hold a good angle or make lots of smoke. Plus everyone will laugh at you (me included!).

Better be a SR20DETT. The KA24 is the worst motor for drifting ever. Have you ever looked under the valve cover? It has some helical lifters that aren't the best design...
