yes if the car sees that its running hot or on the higher side of warm. when it reaches a certain temp the fans will come on. if the fans are coming on quick like not after your long drive. then i would have to suggest that you have a air pocket near the temp sensor causing the slightly higher than normal reading to the ECU. which in turn is turning on the fan earlier than normal.

please make sure your coolant overflow tank is filled up and NOT anywhere close to empty. and the lines are clean to it. when was the last time your rad cap was looked at. fairly new?
