V.W. Passat 1.8t Engine Sludge :(
Engine Sludge;FYI 2003 V.W. Passat 1.8t 116,xxx miles and regular synthetic oil changes (5/40)
whats the best method for curing and removing this problem (FYI 2003 V.W. Passat 1.8t [common problem with sludge according to research including class action lawsuit]) < IDC about that but the shop that has it wants $2,200 dollars to replace this-and-that to fix low oil pressure in the head, (cough Bull$hit i say) the cars worth is $3,xxx. does anyone have advice or expertise in this area???
Check your oil filter, VW's dont like fram and they collapse when hot.
The reason the Passats had this issue is because the 1.8T motor was designed to sit in a FWD car sideways. When Audi and VW used this inline plateform, the motor lost some of its oil capacity. Turbo cars have a natural tendancy to coke oil up. The flow characteristics of that motor are better sideways, than inline.
Anyways, drain a quart of oil out, put in a quart of ATF. Start the car, but do not drive it. Let it idle, but do not load it. Let it cool, then repeat this process a few times.
After that, change the oil, use an OE filter, and Rotella Synthetic for 1000 miles or so and change again.

the shop is going to do a flushing with a machine that hooks up to where the oil filter goes. assuming this does not work out... how can i rectify the sludge and low oil psi once its back in my possession. Is there a cure for this coking effect?

Try the above, you can also flush it with Kerosene if the car is not started. That is risky though. Usually the flush by machine method works pretty well. IIRC, there is an Audi filter that you can use that holds about an additional 1/2 quart.
get a can of seafoam fron any automotive store. drain the old oil out and change the filter. put a bout 1/2 to 3/4 of the can in the engine along with the right amount of oil and let it idle for about 5 to 10 mins. turn the car off and drain oil again. repeat this process about 2 to 3 times.

Do I need to use synthetic (per the cars recommendation) if i go this route, i ask cuz thats going to be expensive if it does not work.
I hate to ask again, but is there a way to prevent this sludge from developing in the 1st place?

shop called said "the flush was ineffective)" so looks like i'll be raping a VW from all orifices,
i think that a burning gas soaked rag in the gas tank will clear the sludge right up!

Does anyone have good info on the extended warranty from V.W. pertaining to this car and its sludge problem (I heard from the shop that V.W. has a 8 year unlimited mileage motor replacement for this model)???...

Update car is at the stealership we have started the warrant process for engine sludge. I do think it will be denied tho... mainly do to the fact i can't produce document about oil changes prior to our ownership.
Take it to the VW dealership you can still get it replaced under warranty sometimes. Its a known issue. Take it to the vw dealership on 41 in Marietta.

V.W. wants to do an oil PSI test (to verify there is low oil PSI) then they want to pull the oil pan (to see if there is sludge and if there is) ...then pull the head (to see if there is engine damage due to oil starvation), in an effort to determine its a sludge issue or not. but i have to pay for all this... what the hell is up with all that.
1. I don't give a fuck if there is engine damage ...if its covered by warranty. because VWOA says that any "Sludge Warranty" covered engine will be replaced with a new engine and turd'o (<-LOL i know thats a D thanx for pointing it out)
2. The head sounds like hell (see video of a similar sound above) and the bells and whistles are sounding that there is no Oil PSI.
3. Why the hell would any stealership not want to do the work ($4,000+-) when VWOA is paying for the work within 6 weeks of completion and approval?

Its all good, if it does not work out in my flavorI'll start pulling the engine apart in my garage.
this is what most folks i see on the audi forum do to correct the sludge problem. either way, once u get it fixed, use a good synthetic oil and get the oversized filter for the 1.8t. i get both from ecs tuning (i forget the exact website) for my audi. they should have the appropriate filter for ur vw.

Do you buy both your filter and oil there, whats the cost shipping included? I use(d) Castrol syntec 5/40 (and/or appropriate weight for all my cars) and usually a K&N or Mobile1 oil filter.
Would you say I have used a good filter and oil? I don't race this car but i do like to drive it in the mountains pretty hard, i can remember severalx2 thousand miles back driving it so hard the the light came on at some of the apexes of tight curves.
i use the same weight usually, they have this synthetic oil called elf total 9000 or something...which is supposed to be really good according to the forums. i usually buy 2 liters and 2 filters at a time because shipping is free for orders over $50 and it's like $85ish i think. about the same as you're paying now probably...
personally i like castrol syntec, i run it with that same mobil1 filter in my boosted db8 with no issues. i think the main thing is that oversized filter for increased oil capacity...which would probably help your car for the mountain driving too...

Update, All V.W. 1.8t and Audi 1.8t motors blow chunks and I do mean chunks(eventually) unless you have retrofitted a larger pump, pan, auto/t timer with better (much better) then required maintenance. "keep all your receipts" if you do your own maintenance?! you better log the performance with time date stamp every time.
in conclusion VWOA (VWUSA) and Subsidiary (AudiUSA AoA) you can go to Hell!
