I got a 1985 VW GTI, it's an 8 valve and I'm not getting electricity when I crank it up so it won't start. Anyone know someone that's good with wiring and stuff that could help me out?

Anyone?
could be a lot of things, first and foremost i recommend buying a bentley manual... check your coil, distributor, ignition timing, etc..
Bentley is your bible. First things to check is the coil and hall effect unit. The ole' 8 and 16 valves are notorious for distributors going bad.

It cranks just doesn't wanna start up. I took out one of the spark plugs, held it on a metal surface and had a friend try to start it up but there was no sparks.
If you're not getting any sparks at the spark plugs just start working your way through the entire ignition system one step at a time until you get to the point where you find the faulty partI would recommend starting with the spark plugs, then ignition wires, then just one part after another.

Where do you live and how much would you pay?
I can look at it on Friday evening. I have experience with these cars and a Bentley manual as well, and spare parts in storage. I don't have my tools with me right now (they're all in storage), but if you have a 10, a 13, a phillips, a spark plug socket, and a multimeter (the multimeter is the most important of all of these) that's about all I'd need for the ignition.
