sounds like something going on with the linkage. check the rear mount also ive had 1 make a car do that. other than that all i can think of is jacking the car up pull the bitch pin and she if it will shift at the tranny with the car level. that will atleast eliminate the linkage/shifter section from the tranny/mount section.

ok this info changes my thoughts. the bitch pin is the roll pin holding the linkage to the tranny. normally if it goes into gear with the car off but not when the car is on 3 things ive found. 1) just put fluid in a empty tranny and it needs a sec to get it flowing. when i say empty i mean bone dry 2) bad clutch. 3) clutch needs to be bleed a lot.

its a cable tranny.... clutch i bought brand new maybe installed wrong? and it was bone dry it had maybe an oz of fluid in it...but then why will it go in gear when the car is turned on and its jacked in the air?

fuck lol u did say it was a 88 my bad i was for whatever reason thinking hydro. all i can think of is something going on inside the tranny. how much fluid u put in. u might have to wait for a second person to chime in to get a better answer.

Had this sort of problem once actually. I didn't get the halfshaft all the way in the housing. Seemed like it was letting the tranny roll, while running (from centrifugal force) and wouldn't let it slip into gear. As soon as I shut it off it worked.

As for your jacking up problem. I dont understand that at at all.

yea and even though i can move the gears in and out when its not started i cant push that shit forward either it acts like its stuck in gear....so the half shaft wasnt all the way in hmm ill check that out but i dont think thats it....one of my friends said maybe the spider gear....but then why would it go in in the air?

Does the tire start moving as soon as you put it in gear (when you have it jacked up). Have you tried to start the car with it in gear? Does it want to move? Have you tried adjusting the clutch cable at all?

You might have to tighten the cable a little more. When you put it in gear in the air and the tire starts moving with the clutch pushed in then that tells you that the clutch is not fully releasing. Adjust the cable more and see it that helps.
