Default I can't post anywhere else. How reliable are Mk2 GTI's?

I have a 95 LT1 Z28 that's going under the knife soon for a very nasty build. It's already completely unreasonable as a daily with the exhaust, high stall, etc etc etc. In the mean time, I want another euro car as a daily. Love my 87 xj6 but it's on blocks right now.

So I'm thinking of a stock-ish VW GTI around 83-87. I need a solid daily that's easy to work on, not known for tons of issues, and is a wagon so I can throw my install tools in the back of. I was also thinking of a Scirrocco, with a picture of Stewie on the back saying, "They don't even make this car any more"

    Any opinions?
