Default Oil viscosity on my '01 Max

so I'm about to hit 100,000 miles on my max... I've been using 5w-30 Mobil 1 synthetic... with this being a high mileage car, should i change it up to a 10w-30 or 10w-40? or should i just leave it the way it is?? any help is greatly appreciated

You could only do harm by changing from 5W-30 to 10W-30 as long as you're running synthetic. The only difference between the two is the 5W-30 is a little thinner than the 10W-30 when it's cold. They both thin out to exactly the same viscosity at operating temperature, but because the 5W-30 starts out a little thinner, it takes less time to thin out and protect the engine better.

It would be ideal if you could fit an oil pressure gauge (even a temporary one under the hood) for testing, and test the different viscosities. You'd be looking for about 9-11 psi of oil pressure per 1000 rpm at operating temperature. Since you're running synthetic, you can go to 0W-30 or 0W-40 and have your engine protected better when it's cold.

As long as you don't drive the balls off it, you should be fine staying with the 30 weight, and because they're the same price, opt for the 0W-30. You'll notice your car will start a little easier and run better when it's cold (which is when 90% of the engine's wear occurs).

If you do drive the balls off it, you can go up to the 40 weight to protect better at higher oil operating temperatures. Still, though, go for the 0W-40.
