Starter Question

I have a 95 integra with mt. I know I need a starter because for the past few days since about saturday evening I will go to crank my car it will turn over but not crank. I do that a few times then it finally cranks. We'll on lunch today I was going to the part store to price a starter and get some other items. I pulled in and turned my car off. Well when I turned it off it acted like it was still cranked, so I cranked it back up and turned it back off and it did it again. Then I started smelling something burning and my temp gauge started rising. After a few min of the cranking it and turning it off, and so forth it finally quit producing the burning smell and finally shut off and acted normal. Is this because the starter is shot or is there something else going on with my motor?

pretty much that noise was the start gear stuck out and spinning. the smell was the starter burning up.
