ya not a good idea, but to each their own. I dont touch on the new r6, you just have to get used to it. It's not really a big deal at all. My boyfriend doesnt touch and he races for AMA I had trouble with hills at first but thats just cuz I am a wuss. Lean angle is your friend

yeah i didn't really touch easily at first, you really don't have to on both feet, it just takes getting used to and a little extra planning at each stop...

i dated a girl that wanted to wear flip-flops when she rode with me (notice the dated!!). as i have told you before... all 600's are very close to the same now. if i were you i would get an older bike, fzr, f2 or f3 ect. something that you can pick up cheap on initial investment and when you drop it, and you will drop it, you can buy parts cheap.
there are three types of riders.................. those that have gone down, those that will and those that lie about it. when you get ready to look for one , have the cash to actually buy, call me and i will go with. everyone knows i've been down enough for all the people here.

Hey, i just saw this thread. If you're shorter but don't want to ride a 250, then the GS500 might be a good compromise. I just got one about 2 months ago.

Please note that ONLY 2004 and later models (meaning '04 and '05) are designated GS500F (meaning they have full fairings on them). My bike is an '89, but its had '04 body pieces and fairings fitted.

Its my first bike, but i'm a big fan of it so far. I had a friend who got a '95 FZR-600 right about the time I got my bike... he's since sold is bike and is going to get a GS500F (for the look, i think). Its a rock solid learner's bike. The stock forks and springs come a tad soft, but if you're tiny then you won't notice unless you do hard braking at fast speeds. IM me if you have any other questions about the GS500. My screen name is TarzanBoy007

In the meantime, here's a pic or two of my bike

    Good one.

Look at the Suzuki SV650. Fantabulous first bike. Cheap(er) on insurance, pretty fast, and handles well. That's going to be my first bike. Hopefully buying this winter.

I am looking to get a CBR600 this winter as my first bike. Love the way they look and still kind of fast for my small self. I mean what does a 150lb 5'6" guy need with anything bigger than a 600. It will be just fine for me. Let me know if anybody is selling an F3 or so. Thanks

    you know it baby!!!

and a 600 is great around here. i have a 750, just cause it was a good buy. when i sell it i will get another 600. more fun. my 750 is modified and will lift the front tire at worst times, like when you dont expect it. in the rain the rear tends to come out from under me.... bad feeling.

yeah-I would recommend a ninja500 or SV650S-they both have fairly low seat heights and are easy to ride and fairly fast. the SV makes about 70hp compared to a new 600 makin 105+

like Luthi said most the new 600SS weight the same and make about the same HP but they aren't great first bikes

One post, and talking sh!t ..... :jerkit:

Bring your Gixxer 750 and try to hang with my old R1 ...
For your information, Angel won the 600, 600 Super, and 750 North FL region (WERA) on a stock R6. The Gixxer 750 riders couldn't beat a stock R6 ...

At least you're right that Katana's suck.....

i recently bought my first bike, a 98 zx7r. I wanted a 600 but a lot of my friends told me i would learn to ride it and want a bigger bike in about a month, and I am glad i listned to them. Remember, a 600 is the smallest weakest sportbike other than the ninja 250's and 500's. the 750 is a good size, but my kawasaki is BIG and heavy. I would agree that the gsxr 750 is a solid bike. katanas, seca's, and the fzr's are pretty lame, you will get laughed at! dont be scared of a big bike, its better to have the power and not use it than than to need it and not have it.

You won't like the looks of anything less than a 600.

    You won't need more than a 600, so that's a start... GET A 600.

    Which one???

Newer bikes are lighter than old ones, but of course will cost you more.

If you get a newer one, they are all the same (unless you are really going to be riding hard which I don't think you will), so just get one you like the look of... Everyone will have there own opinion about which is best.

Any 600 you get will have to be lowered if you are shorter/smaller. You can try and pull it off but I wouldn't reccommend it! If you do it is just a matter of time before you put it on its side, and just hope that you aren't under it when that happens!

(I saw a really short girl riding a new 600 last year and she was leaning on one side when she stopped just to touch the ground with her tippy toe! That's an accident waiting to happen if you ride in the city or anywhere really)

Actually, FZRs and Seca IIs are used a lot as track bikes. They are a lot lighter, and race parts are cheap and readily available. While not as quick as a newer bike, they are definately not slow, and definatley will not be laughed at by knowledgeable riders.
The newer 600s make more power than the 98 ZX7Rs and weighs a lot less. Don't think that 600s are slow. The new R6 is faster than a lot of liter bikes.

BTW - Your ZX7R should be really stable at 140+. Sometimes there is an advantage to the weight. I've ridden them. :-)

If you want a spare motor and/or wheels for your bike, let me know. I think that a friend of mine might still have both in his garage. He sold the bike, but not sure about the extra parts.

if you laugh at someone because of the bike they ride then you are probably one of the guys constantly playing "sweep" in the mountains or playing backmarker on the track . i've watched plenty of guys on SV650's pull quicker times at jennings than half the folks on literbikes (myself included). seen some fast folks on EX500's as well.

i was thinking initially of the R6 or the gixxer7fiddy, but like you, price for me is key. and also reliability. a couple guys i know that ride. say gixxers will spent more time in the shop than on the road. and i can't have that.

If you are looking at the first generation R6, watch out for a bad tranny. They are known for having trouble.
