Del slo owner needs help
I got a 94 Honda civic Del sol, and im having a problem with the 80amp battery fuse blowing. It seems to me that the frame of the car is some how hot (not grounded), cause when ever i hook up the negative terminal to the battery, the fuse blows instantly. i thought it might have been the starter getting stuck in the engaged position, cause the problem started after it turned over one time and stop abruptly. But after toying with that for ten mins found out that that also isn't the problem. I've looked around for a pinched wire or sensor or something obvious, but so far nothing has jumped out at me. Can anyone give me an idea of what could cause this problem and how to fix it. i have no equipmment to check electrical components or voltage or draw, but if you can give an idea of where to look i think i can go from there. Thanks in advance.

That wouldn't be the only reason the main fuse blows. Could be a few things, but something of this caliber is too hard to diagnose over the net.

The alternator could be throwing out too much voltage. Have the alternator and regulator tested. If you could get hold of a voltmeter, turn the car on (if you can get it to idle) and put the positive lead from the voltmeter to the positive battery post and negative to negative. If it reads 12.5 to high 13's its fine. If it reads 14's or more, the alternator is throwing out too much voltage (bad regulator), which can blow the fuse.

First I'd like to say thanks for taking the time to look and respond. I understand its a very difficult and vast (as it were) problem to diagnose over the web. Its almost an impossible question to answer without an electrical shop and about $500. I was just wondering if this is a common problem in Hondas and if so would anyone know a general idea of where to start. And as far as the alternator test as was suggested, i would love to test it but the car wont crank at all. I cant even hook up the battery without the fuse blowing let alone turn it on, or turn it over. But any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

^500 bucks? We diagnose 81.00 an hr and typically only takes one hour.

if it is blowing the fuse as soon as hooked up you most likely have a dead short to ground somewhere. check the battery cables first and foremost. is the battery in backwards? that will do it too.

That's what my first idea was too. But that's not the issue. In fact i cant even hook up the battery period without it blowing. The instant it touches the negative post it blows.
