    Default VSS?

my car is throwing a code 17, VSS, CEL. it only does it when im slowing down in gear, not on the gas. i mean i understand that the sensor needs to be replaced because of it. but what im asking is, what is the effect of a bad VSS? sorry if it sounds like a dumb question. lol thanks for any answers though.

my speedo does jump at lower speeds if that has anything to do with it, typical with g1's.
