Unhappy Third to first at 3000 rpm

95 Golf III automatic. Went from drive to first at around.. 35 mph? 3000 rpm.
First just revs and sounds like it's going to stall.
Everything sounds almost normal in third. but revs too fast and there's a sort of grinding?
And in drive after 40 mph it's slow going. takes a while to get to 60.

Doesn't seem like a problem that will fix itself so.. anyone know of a good VW place? Or know someone that knows volkswagen transmission well?

Any help at all would be greeeat!

Oh and my speedometer goes all wacky sometimes now.

I'm saying that as i was driving - thru a neighborhood - i ended up shifting from D to 1. I shifted from third to drive to third but my shifter jumped to first. and now my transmission is about to die. does that help clarify

    Yes it's automatic.

I was trying out a fuel saving technique.
You get up your rpms - shut off the engine and coast pretty much.
I took it up to 3000 rpm in third. then shut off the engine as i start up this little hill.
I was in drive for some reason so i go to shift back into third but my shifter slips into first. my car is old and shoddy - but yeah - it wasn't s'pposed to be in first.

So now my transmission is wrecked - yes i know i'm an idiot. i just wanna get it fixed.
A push in the right direction is all i need.

Kinda noisy in all the gears. Drive is fine up 'til 40 mph then it seems like everyone is passing me.

First is gone. Just revs and i might roll forward a bit.

When i press on the gas at highway speed there's a high pitched revving/squealing but goes away when i let off.

Is it fixable? Or should i replace it?

Never under any circumstances should you put an automatic transmission in neutral, or shut off the engine while driving. You just found out first hand what can happen.

Man it sounds like your transmission is shot. Best bet is to call some transmission places up. Just go to google and type in your city along with the word "transmission". Some of these places are really nice and will point you in the right direction.

Honestly, your cheapest route would be getting a used one. You'll probably spend more re-building the trans propperly than the car is worth.

x2 sometimes lessons have to learned the hard way, just cause you can do that in a manual trans car doesnt mean you can do it in an auto
