Default So I decided to go with a 350Z

I had posted a comment earlier in the week about an S2000. Well I got down there and the car just wasnt in good condition. I got home and I was a little bummed cause I really wanted it...But I got back on Craigslist and searched around and found a 2004 350Z thats daytona blue...I went and drove it and it was pretty much badass...Im going over there to close out the deal tomorrow...

z33's are great cars!!! i'm not just saying that because i'm a nissan fan boy, but they are. s2000's are nice cars, but not good for a daily driver...cramped...have to rev the engine to get power...the z is an all around smoother, nicer, and more powerful car.

not a big fan of 350z's but i love the look of G35's but it might be out of your price range.

VQ35's are a hell of a motor but it is just too expensive to own one and produce the power that most people out there want.

Just imagine your tranny going out on you and you have to replace it......? too expensive for me ill stick with my hondas thank you

OP, 350z is a nice car. However, it's a very expensive game that you're stepping into. It's going to cost at least 10K to mildly mod that car. So unless u're up to the point where u want to keep it pretty much stock, then get it. Otherwise, it can turn into a costly game.

$10,000 just to make it a little faster? That sounds like a huge waste of money to me.

ehhh...kinda. The M3 will cost you almost 10Gs more, and as far as making more power than stock, your in the same boat. You have to go FI to get good power out of it, and aftermarket parts are even MORE expensive...

For the $10k you would have spent in mods you would have a completely stock car that is probably faster than the modified Z (arguable)

unless something goes wrong like all electronic model BMW's do.

or the fact that test pipes, will put you right next to an M3 on the highway

the price of an M3 is way too high.. and for a 6 year old car you're paying 29 grand for a 2002...2003 IF YOU'RE LUCKY. no thanks. I thought about getting an M3, and the Z is defeinitely the better choice. Unless you don't care about money.

That definately isn't a factual statement. I personally have raced an E46 M3 that was 100% stock when I had all my mods (cai, plenum, testpipes & catback) and he still pulled on me once we got up to about 110mph, then he steadly walked away.

Theres no reason for you to make a post saying that a persons car sucks..there is a type of car that is very popular on this board that i happen to think sucks but you dont see me telling the owner that it does...it's just sort of rude...

Granted that statement was kind of plain and i didn't relize you had already bought the car, i thought you were asking what we thought: so i told you.

If you like your Z, then thats fine! Dont worry how rude i am bout it.

    Let me be fair:

Pre 07 350z = Good bang for the bucks. Forget power, just improve on wheels, tires, suspension, and you'll have a nice handling car

07 350z = Very good in power because of the new HR motor. Expensive Z never the less

E46 M3 in place of an 04Z is not wise for OP's budget because it's about 10-12K more than the G. Insurance is a pita. Maintenance is a b1tch and costly.

If OP has more budget, then E46 M3 is definitely the way to go. Judging from his posts, I doubt it. So overall, the 04Z he bought is a good choice.

I was just saying if he's going to start modifying the Z it will not stop, I know this all too well myself and I KNOW you do too Kev

I'm a hypocrite though cause I just ordered a clutch and flywheel for my G, exhaust.. wheels and a drop are next.

You're right, HR started in 07, but I think the LED taillights came in 06. Not sure about the headlights. Originally, I thought you were gonna say something about the rev-up vs. non rev-up engines...

My G made 224rwhp bone stock, after my CAI, upper plenum, testpipes and cat back, I was making 240rwhp. They new vq35hr is making around 250rwhp bone stock, but i have seen a dyno with only test pipes and exhaust on an HR and it made 264rwhp (i think).

A: Rev-up Motor has higher peak HP, lower peak torque, and a higher redline (7000RPM)
Non-rev-up Motor has lower peak HP, higher peak torque, and a lower redline (6600RPM)

Rev-Up Motor has variable Intake and Exhaust timing.
Non-Revup Motor ONLY has variable Intake timing.

You can tell which one you have by looking at your redline on your tachometer.

Q: What is a MREV, and MREV2? Which one do I need for my rev-up (300hp) or non-rev-up 287hp motor?

For 2003 - 2006 350Z's / G35's, Nissan has designed two different types of lower collector:

REV-UP lower collector from the 300hp motor = shorter runners which are tuned for lower peak torque, but higher peak horsepower.
NON-REV-UP lower collector from the 287hp motor = longer runners which are tuned for higher peak torque, but lower peak horsepower.

MREV = same exact thing as the non-rev-up lower collector, but Motordyne Enginering has given it a name.
MREV2 = Using the MREV as a starting material, this is a CUSTOM lower plenum that is sold by Motordyne Engineering. It has been precisely machined to remove aluminum from critical locations on the MREV. In other words, it is like a much improved version of the MREV which reduces restriction and improves HP / TQ.

If you have a non-revup motor (6600RPM redline), your best bang for your buck is to get the 5/16" spacer. The 5/16" spacer makes the most HP for the money. OR, you may choose to get the MREV2. By replacing your stock lower collector (MREV) with this better flowing version, you will make better "area under the curve" on the dyno in terms of HP gain. My opinion is that you should choose one or the other -- either MREV2 OR 5/16" spacer. If you get both, the HP gain will exhibit "diminishing returns", meaning you will spend a lot more money to make not much extra HP. So, usually the recommended option for the non-revup guys is to get the 5/16" spacer.

If you are a rev-up owner (7000RPM redline), you will basically only benefit from getting BOTH a 5/16" spacer and the MREV2. If you get the MREV2 only, your mid-range torque will increase but your maximum HP will drop off severely. If you only get the 5/16" spacer, you will not see a benefit. Several dynos have proven that for the rev-up motor, you basically need both the spacer and the MREV2, which will make a lot of midrange torque, without sacrificing too much peak HP.

I did but then turned around and bought another G.. I just missed it way too much. I thought about an M3.. and still do but it was something about the G35 I liked. So I'm going back to the setup that I enjoyed the most (not turbos)

M3 debate is subject to opinion. Cost is definitely higher but for the value, even at 6 years old I think it is the better choice.

I would LOVE to see a Z with only test pipes run next to an M3. Better yet show me an M3 owner that admits a test pipe'd Z was neck and neck with them and I will admit I'm wrong.

That said, I love the VQ
