    Default emissions/Cat converter issues

My friend has a 98 civic DX and he went to get the emissions done since they just expired and it instantly failed. He looked up the fail code and it was for the cat converter. He doesnt have $400-500 to fix it and needs help passing. If ne one knows where to get a cheap cat converter or knows how to make it pass without actually fixing it, we would both really appreciate it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

if it s a "cat", go to mineke, they put universal cats on for like 100 bucks, but since it is a civic id buy a direct bolt in.

The universal cats are temporary, and you'll most likely have to put another one on it next year. Find a direct bolt in. But, I'd make sure that is your problem first.

Def. go with a direct bolt in. It takes 15 minutes to put it in yourself and you're not having to pay for someone else's labor. They should be all over the place in the FS section.

What I would do is reset the code and wait for the monitors to reset. OBD II vehicles up to '00 are allowed for 2 monitors not to set. '01 and newer vehicles are only allowed 1 monitor to not set. If you can get ahold of a scanner that can read OBD readiness, I'd pay attention to the all of your monitors. Make sure that your gas tank has at least 1/2 a tank of gas so EVAP can set. I'm pretty sure that the light will come back on later, but it won't come back on imediately. It will be on just long enough to possibly pass emissions. I'd probably do about 3 minutes of driving to be sure that some of the other monitors set. Sometimes they can set right at idle.

    K series 626. That's right. It's got a K in it.

Go to advance auto parts and buy a direct fit(bolt-on) cat. I bought mine for my 99' civic Si for $197. Dont forget to buy new gaskets.
