d16 auto tranny problem

i just bought a 97 civic and it seems like it only has 2 gears.

its the auto tranny

i think the guy that had it before me drove it like a stick

possible problems and solutions wanted.

oh, and my cash is a little tight.

so it has reverse and first gear?

its got reverse, what seems to be 2nd and 3rd. no d4 and no first.

check engine light? Check fluid if its almost black or dark dark brown , thats means its not been maintain,and you might need a overhaul, you can drain the old fluid out by using a 3/8 ratchet an take the lower bolt out, an then re tighten it, but not to tight, snugg it up, then refill is about 3 1/2 quarts lmk thanks Joshua
