How to build a High Rev Engine?

What do you need to do to a honda motor to make it a high rev engine? I have an JDM H23A and would like to raise the stock rev limit but i dont want to destroy my bottom end. I know building the head with cams and titanium springs and retainers will handle up to 8000. But what if I wanted to go higher? Is Vtec the only reason why the h22 can handle such high rpm's? Any info will be much appreciated.

No I want to build a motor that builds alot of N/A power but at the same time use the motor that came with my car. who said h22's go to 8?? i still cant figure out what your obsession with that number is....NA should have a broad powerband not peak at 19k rpm....

To give you an answer you want:

You will need to consider these things!
1. Oil pressure! A normal honda oil pump in new condition produces about 85psi thats good for roughly 8500-9000rpms. If you want to rev higher you need more pressure to not go boom.

2.Bearings Bearings Bearings. Every bearing in there needs to be switched to a race version.

3. Yes build the head. period.

4. Also need to take into consideration the other ambiant flowing components. i.e. manifols etc. (maybe itbs for full advantage)

5. Remeber the other parts that have to spin with the motor. Transmission may go boom from the revs. Also i would recommend not having one of those super light flywheels (6lbs for instance) they have been know to shatter at high rpm abuse.

6. Someone correct me if otherwise but im going to assume that the H23 has no sleeves like the H22. High revs are going to be incredibly dangerous if that is the case. Aluminum doesnt like heat so you could easily end up with a warped cylinder and that would suck.

On to this guys questions. You have to look at the bottom end of the motor to see what it takes to rev high. The H23 has a 95mm stroke and the H22 has a 90.7mm stroke. This is the main reason the H22 can rev higher. To take advantage of the Vtec head you have to rev higher. Like someone said earlier you have to look at the flow of the head and manifolds if you do build the motor to rev higher. If you really want to build your H23 to rev higher I would suggest doing some research on Honda-tech.

Finally. Ok I preciate the advice instead of the ridicule. So basically In order to rev higher safely I would have to convert my bottom end to h22 parts (crank, rods, pistons) and call it a day. Would installing the h22 oil squirts help?

Doing that your gonna lose motor everywhere. In motocross, in my Honda CR 250, we ran a 3mm stroker to gain pull with out revving. Made it by far a more efficient motor.

Unless there's something different with a car motor thats going to change it for the better. I can't see that though? My Yamaha YZF 400, 4 stroke, we went as far as a 12mm stroker. It was incredible! I could get away with running far less RPM'S and make more power doing so. I could however still get close to the same R's and make un real power.

My CR 250 Dirtbike was pushing 65hp at the rear wheel with nothing but a stroker, some strategically placed spacer plates, bigger carburator, and an adjustable exhaust.

I've been toying with the Idea of a 5mm exhaust spacer on my header to pull it away from the head some. This gives the exhaust time to flow straight, for a longer period of time and gain more velocity before it has to make any twists and curves. As with my carburator was 10mm Spaced. Let the fuel and air tumble more before entering the combustion chamber. Few things that a guy back home will be testing on several different vehicles. Once I hear and find out how it works out, if good, i'll be doing this to my car. Its good for a few HP on a Dirtbike So i'm sure if it works it'll be great on a car as well.

Naw not really. I want to go with the best build for the motor i got. not a swap. so I'm sticking with the h23 and just improving on that.

How much are you wanting to spend. I know where a couple Frankensteins (H22/H23 hybrid) are making 250whp...

rods, rod stroke ratio, springs, retainers , etc.

H23s will need RODS, or stock rods with ARP bolts at the MINIMUM.

youll need a GOOD oiling system for such a large stroke. shim the oil pump.

bearings as osmeone said, i would run ACL RACE.

no reason to rev a big motor to the moon, keep the revs down, setup the big stroke to make powere EARLIER.

For really high revs, you need to decrease the piston speed.
