I think he's talentless, myself. Of course I'm from the old school where lyrics mean a lot to a track, ya know. Folks today don't really care about whether or not lyrics make any sense as long as it rhymes or something. Props to him for making his work, though. Later, QD.

his lyrics are good. just because he isnt sending out a message you like doesnt mean his lyrics are bad. he isnt a story teller like common or slick rick, but the boy can flatout rhyme. ppl forget lyrics are not about what you say. its how you say what you are trying to get at. wayne is super witty, good word play, creative, knows how to work the beat. super talented to say the least. any one who thinks wayned is talentless need to say the same about jayz because they are about the same as far as lyrics and style and music go.

edit. lyrics were horrible back in the early 90s. they were getting good when biggies blew up in the mid 90s. but still, rhyme sceems and lyrics were just so simple in early rap. now i will agree that in early 2000s was when lyrics peeked. there were a lot of rappers doing really well. now its only a few. old school rap is simple rap. i like old school rap, but i do know the difference

I can't stand Jay-Z either. Never have liked his stuff. But he's much more talented that Wayne. And lyrics are EXACTLY about what you say. I'm not sure why you think that it's not. And I don't consider mumbling a "super talent." But again, it's all about opinion.

Wayne talks about damn near the same thing now as he did back in his CMM days. It's just that he's gotten progressively harder to understand.

that went over your head i see. its not about the message, its how well you speak about what ever it is you choose to rap about. wayne raps about money, hoes, killing, etc and he does it very well. way better than he used to in the old CMR days. you listen to this garbage he puts on the radio and make the assumption that he muimbles on everything...good for you.

yeah, me being white has nothing to do with my open understanding of hip hop. yeah i like wayne. so do a lot of black ppl and other white ppl and asian ppl, and who ever else. i also like nas, jayz, old ugk, rakim, eric b, and the rest of the spectrum of rap. who cares what color anyone is

Waynes commercial music, SUCKS. Hes horrible. Although i agree with QD that he has learned to market that sound and those antics to the right crowd so he sells records.

Lollipop, Ms. Officer, A milli were all radio hits and IMO GARBAGE SONGS. But they sold his record. It was what suburban WHITE people wanted to dance horribly in the clubs too :P

However, ive given some of his mixtapes a listen, he seems much more refined. Prob not as fucked up on his syrup either. I will say that he has some pretty catchy lyrics and hooks on his mixtapes. Do they tell a story and make a profound impact on society, no not at all. Is it cool to listen to, i think so.

To me theres POP rap and then theres Hip Hop.

Pop Rap is Lil Wayne, Plies, 50 Cent, Drake, Kanye, Young Jeezy, TI, Jay Z etc These are guys that while may have some HIP HOP songs, or come from hip hop, they are commercial and sell millions of records. Jeezy is the only one im kinda hesitant to put in this category, but hes been on enough Wayne and Kanye songs to make him a commercial rapper IMO.

Hip Hop to me is Common, Talib, Mos, Blackstar, Gang Starr, Lupe Fiasco, De La Soul, Rakim, Wu Tang, Biggie, Tribe , Cole, etc. Guys that even though they may have had some commercial success , are a little more nitty gritty when it comes to lyrics and production. They have a lot more heart an soul in their albums.

Then you got some guys who are in the middle, like Dr Dre, Eminem, OLD 50 cent, etc. Eminems Marshal Mathers album imo was one of the best hip hop albums of all time. Get rich or die tryin was one of the best albums of all time. The Chronic was one of the best albums of all time. But newer Em and 50 is all commercial rap garbage IMO. Some of its not even that good.

I can agree with that. It's songs like the commercialized ones that get to a certain audience (white folks) that wouldn't usually listen to rap to listen. They come and listen to the stuff and then run around telling folks that they listen to rap.

As an old school dude, I guess I do take it a little to heart when I hear white dudes getting into rap and thinking they know all this and that when they don't really know that much. Nowadays, with the advent of GOOGLE and WIKIPEDIA, anyone can "know" anything without actually having lived or experienced it.

Now don't mistake that as I'm telling people what to like or not like, but to try and talk "shop" with someone that actually knows what's going down is pure ludicrous. I don't go into the FORCED INDUCTION section and talk turbos because I don't know shit. You know. Later, QD.

I don't get offended, dude, so it's all good.

I am white. But I've also been around the block. A lot. I was actually at the corner record store buying the very first Grandmaster Flash album back in 1978. I was buying and listening to Kurtis Blow. When it was fresh out of the studio. I was studying and learning from the onset of this music genre. Do I know it all? Hail no.

And you have to know....Reading is FUNdamental. That was an 80's slogan to promote schools and reading books. Later, QD.

what you seem to have missed in all this is, yeah 80s rap is the fundamentals. but new rap is better. i liek old ass rap and i like new rap. you think the guys that played basketball in the 50s are better than say lebron or kobe? its the same with rap. styles evolve and get better. wayne is at the top along with jayz, they have the best styles and lyrics. come out of the 80s and learn to like new rap, its hot if you open your mind....well some of it is hot.

I will say that you do come off a little condescending with the music knowledge QDizzle, but i can understand why. Theres a ton of people that listen to Hot 107.9 and think they know what rap is or what is does. They pretend like rap started with people like Lil Wayne, Kanye, etc. They have no clue what was going on back in the 80s and 90s.

When i was growing up, i guess around mid to late 90s was my high school years. I was heavy into the west coast rap. Snoop, Dre, Dog Pound, Spice 1, 2Pac, etc. I think freshman year in highschool i listend to Biggie, and then i started to branch out into other music. Capone N Noreaga, Wu Tang, Rakim, Gang Starr, Boot Camp Click, KRS-One, etc etc etc

So my musical tastes were shaped a lot differently than someone that lived the 70s-80s and experienced that music. But that doesnt mean i dont know or comprehend as much as they might.

That would be like saying just cause you didnt live in the XXs you dont know anything about Rock N Roll because you didnt experience the Beatles, Led Zeppelin , Rolling Stones, Elvis, etc

So downloaded a lot of Drake's songs yesterday and made a cd today. As I was searching for songs, I realized he did a lot of song with Trey Songz and Lil Wayne (probably because Drake is Wayne's prodigy). But most of them are pretty cool and the rest are aight. But all in all I still like Drake. I feel he is def talented! But that's just my opinion

Thats opinion based man, you cant argue that. Try telling my dad that new rock is better than Peter Frampton or Lynyrd Skynyrd, or Zeppelin or Steve MIller band. He will disagree with you all day long.

You are stating your OPINION as fact, cant do that.

I actually haven't missed anything. New rap is only better in the ears of the listener. You think it's better. I think otherwise. What's better is completely opinion based. There is no learning to like something you don't like. It's few and far between, but I've never said I hated all newer shit. Just most of it. I commented on a thread the other day about some dudes track (in this section) that I thought was real good.

I'll say this, and you may not get this, but rap, back in the day, was more liked by the people listening to it then it is now, by the people listening to it. This means that although the audience was much smaller then (because of not having the exposure rap has got today), they were a lot more receptive to all forms of the genre. Everyone listened to everyone. Now that rap is much bigger and there are more people listening to it, there are more different, conflicting personalities. So it turns into more controversy than harmony.

But to tell someone to learn to like it? Lolol. Later, QD.

Here is why I feel the way I do. I don't claim to know it all. It only comes down as the way you feel because I try to explain the history from an experimental side of things. Not from a GOOGLE site. There's a difference in listening to Eric B when his music is 10 years old and listening to it when it was fresh. You may not understand, but that may because you don't feel like it like I do. There was just "thing" in the air that's hard to describe when innovators were inventors. And I don't try to sound condescending (if I do I certainly apologize, even to Bstone). And I'm also not trying to say that you (or bstone) don't know anything AT ALL about rap. Just the past, lolol.

I'll tell you right now I don't know a motherfucking thing about that era of music. I listen to the shit out of it. But I'd have to be the GOOGLING dude to learn anything about the groups of that era. If I don't know, I'll tell you I don't know. Later, QD.

To some, there is a true feeling in the heart with music. I'm glad I was able to be right there when rap first broke out. The feeling was really crazy. Hard to describe. People really anticipating what was going to come out next. What weas going to be invented next. We go to the record store and pick up the newest Afrikka Bambatta album and check it out. It was all a new thing to us. And back then, it was all underground (until it finally broke the surface after a couple of years). There was nothing like sitting on your front porch or in the cafeteria at school with those big ass boom boxes listening to the shit. And best of all, it was (for the most part) peaceful.

I can't knock another for not being there. I can't knock another for what he/she feels is the best in their ears. So again, I offer up an apology to bstone if he feels I was knocking his opinion. I wasn't. I was just knocking, in my opinion, the artist in question. Later, QD.

But that's cool. It won't change anything. And my apology still stands. Later, QD.

dude i bought rakim cds when they were brand new, who are you to say who "experianced" music during its era. even ppl that didnt buiy it back then can understand the music by listenig to others. this girl i know is like your avg suburb white chic. she saw how into my music i get how a song could change my entire mood. she asked millions of questions and i feel she understands now what it was like when epmd was hot and others alike, she wasnt bumping it brand new. but she seen the feeling i get when it comes on becasue i can hear it as brand new still. experience is passed down, not only 1st hand

Unless your age is wrong, then I highly doubt it. And I am me and know, FOR A FACT, that you did not experience old school in it's era. When it was brand new. That's fact; not opinion. Later, QD.

I agree/disagree here. Drake IS hot. But he NOT a good rapper. He's just another cookie cutter rapper that sits perfect with Wayne because they are of the same mold. This is just what people are listening to right now. Sad, but true. Later, QD.

It may be, but I guarantee you I'm damn near right about them. According to your age, you were born in 1984. Eric B and Rakim's first album came out when you were about 3 years old. Their last together came out in 1991. I highly doubt you were sitting around listening and taking in the "hip hop atmosphere" at 7 years of age. Highly doubt it. Like most any other child, you probably didn't really get into listening to music until you were around 10, probably 11 years old. And even then, you were probably just listening to the music at hand and not really concerned with anything else. I was around 10 years when I really started paying attention to who was who. But of course the year I turned 10 was about the year rap came out on the scene. So no you didn't experience old school hip hop when it was still new. Later, QD.

Later, QD.
    That was all well said
I really wish I could have experienced the same thing. Growing up in the 80's was the closest I got to it all. But sounds like I missed out on a lot. But all in all I can totally relate to how music just magically has this overwhelming feeling over your whole body. Maybe that's why I listen to what I listen to. It speaks to my heart or what have you. Music affects different people different ways.

Exactly. It can be any form of music and any artist in that form that can make anyone feel something for it. I can't get enough of listening to Melle Mel. btstone can't get enough of Wayne. You can't get enough whoever. It all gives us our own individual feelings about it. There's really no right or wrong answer because it's all relative. Later, QD.
