Turbo Stock Motor
I just wanted to get some opinions on putting a turbo on my stock motor, Thought about doing it if i can get one for cheap. Just something to do untill i have a new motor ready. Im not looking to get any hp from the turbo just figured i would mess around
Go for it. It can be reliable if you use quality parts and have it professionally tuned. I'm making 306 whp on a B16 with stock internals, for example.
You will need to define "cheap" though. $1000 is about the lower limit for a pieced-together turbo setup.

There are always exceptions. With some diligence anybody should be able to do a cheap turbo setup for about $1000, but not everyone will find the deals to be able to do it for $400. You got lucky.
Unless you're running very low boost numbers, it's a good idea to at least strip and rebuild the motor with new, lower compression pistons. Honda motors are generally pretty hi compression and don't mix well with turbos. Of course idk about your particular motor.
Also, you should find some good **** at your local junkyard. Should keep your parts cost under a grand if you're smart. A friend of mine boosted a GTI for UNDER $400, but he did all the extra motor work himself.
And you say you're not looking to make any more power? Why spend the money then? Unless the turbo is just hanging off of your block with no exhaust running through it, it's probably going to be making at least some boost, and boost can be bad unless your internals are strong enough and you have a way to control it.
I would ask around someplace other than IA about boosting your car on stock internals, because it seems people have done it and had success, but if you want some serious power down the road, a properly installed turbo can be more, powerful, more fun and cheaper than a motor swap, depending on the motor you want to swap in.
Also I've heard the eBay turbos are great as long as you disassemble them and put them pack together while nearly overtightening all the bolts that hold them together. IOW, the parts are good but they're put together terribly.

bro unless your crapping money i woulnt boost your D series just to see what happens a cheap ebay turbo kit is gonna be like the goldfish in walmart....By the time you make it home your turning around for a refund. i know too many ppl that have ebay turbo kits and regret it so much hell if you want to throw money away buy some toys for some kids this Xmas and donate

if u want to turbo your stock d-series its not a prob you just cant get crazy with the boost i would not go over 5psi but thats plenty of speed and will make a bov sound off nice there are plenty running around columbus some haul ass some luck good

Ive been there and done this. Heres my advice.
If you are d15b2, do the MPFI conversion. If your a Si this doesnt matter.
Piece together a good kit, not using EBAY MANIFOLDS, TURBOS or WASTEGATES!!
Convert to obd1 and run crome.
Even on a d15b2 with 7-9 psi you WILL walk all over b16s and GSR swapped hatches for MUCH less money. When i was running 9psi on my d15b2 it would wax b16s.
the key is getting a good tune and the motors can actually last for a while as long as you are conservative. If you get boost happy it will blow. Be reasonable and tune it well and it can still be reliable!
I ran turbo d16z6 for years, sold the stuff off it, put a b16a in my car and was uber pissed. they are ****ing slow. I sold the b16 off, rebuilt the d16z6 and now im about to re turbo it again. That should tell you something.
Go for it! Worst case scenario, as long as you plan parts out good, if you ever go b-series you will only be a few parts away from still having your turbo stuff work on it.
It tells me you prefer boost? You really can't compare a boosted engine to a stock one. Everything feels slow once you get a taste of turbo goodness.
I primarily made that point because another poster said that a b16 would be faster than a stock block turbo-d. Yes turbo definitely has a feel of its own, a properly sized turbo on a d has given me a power band in the mountains that i have enjoyed for quite a while. I respect and enjoy all motor as well, but price vs price you can get that similar power (low 200s whp) a lot easier on a turbo-d.
go 4 it dude im boostin my stock d16z6 now and it run good... all u need is a good tune.. i know someone sellin a kit or 2 for a good price.. and it not a ebay kit
