Default Coffee table out a scrap block.

I recently decided to make a table out of a blown up motor. I finally found one for a decent price and began work earlier this week. The process was pretty painless, and not too expensive. My eventual plan is to put some lights inside to shine up the cylinders, but for now I'm pretty happy with it. BTW my apologies for wasting a b16 block.

    Block - $50
    Paint - $10
    Glass - $65
    Total - $125

Here it is when I first got it home:

I then took the rods and the crank out to do a bit of cleaning:

My house has a pretty low couch so I didn't need the table to be that tall, but I was worried that if I just sat it flat on the ground it would be way low. So I had to figure out a way to lift it back off the ground a little. I decided on putting the pistons and rods back in upside down and let them act as legs/feet. Then I had to figure out a way to keep the crank from turning. I found two small strips of metal laying around and used the main bolts to hold them against the crank.

Here's a picture of the mock up:

Next it was time to paint:

A little wd-40 took care of the rust inside the cylinders. I found a place around the corner from the house that sold custom order glass. I was surprised at how cheap it was. $65 for 3/8 thick 18 x 41. It only took two days to make and I picked it up today. I mounted the glass with some clear "sucker" type things that hold shampoo racks to the wall in the shower. And here is the final result:

Nice! I'm about to this with a VR38DETT (R35 GT-R) but I'm not sure yet how, since the block isn't flat at the top like an inline 4.

I remember there was one in Panoz years ago, may still be there, using a V8 of course.

You could weld the rods to where the heads bolt up and use the pistons to hold the glass.

Yeah I have seen that done before, but I don't have rods or pistons, just a bare block.

That's what I was going to do, I have a bare Ford SHO v8 block in my garage and a set of Miata pistons and rods... They're close enough in size no one will know the difference.

nice work. My buddy did one out of a Masteratti B-Turbo motor years ago and left it pretty complete. I wish my blocks were in one piece when I get done with them.....

I ended up going with small circles of velcro. I just put it in my house today and it looks and works awesome.

I only see one problem. The glass edge. Is it smoothed to where it won't cut someone? Especially around the corners? I would probably like to see some sort of frame around it. Maybe door edge guards in chrome or black? Later, QD.

The only way it could cut someone is if they smashed straight into a corner with a body part with no meat on it. i.e. Forehead, shin, something of that sort. But this is the way I wanted it so I'm willing to take the risk. The glass makers assured me this is one of the edges they use all the time for table tops.

I haven't had a single reliability problem with it. My gfs lab ran into it, lots of drinks/food on one side at a time, couple of people put their feet on it (which I wasn't happy about) and it hasn't even acted like it was gonna tip over.

I hope you didn't take my questions/concerns as standoffish, dude. I certainly didn't mean it that way. I was just curious about sharp corners. I actually think that a rounded piece of glass would look well on there. I do think it's pretty cool. But for me to have one, I would probably need a "man cave" type of room. Later, QD.
