Default Instructor Killed At CMP This Weekend...

I hear an instructor was killed at a PCA event at CMP this weekend. No names released I saw, but R.I.P.

We seem to forget even track days are dangerous.

The car was a caged 930 Turbo. It hit coolant and went off to the right at T8/9 into the trees. The instructor was 58 years old and both were wearing Hans devices. The instructor was killed on impact and the driver walked away.

This is crazy because I spun on coolant in turn 1 on Road Atlanta and put my car into the inside wall at about 90, spun across the track and stopped in the gravel about 100 feet away from where I grazed the wall. One wrong move and that could've been my passenger dead, luckily I made the right corrections to minimize the impact. I CANNOT believe they had Hans devices and a cage and this happened, may he rest in peace and be in my prayers

The word is that he was impaled, and died from massive trauma.

Not at an HPDE, TT, or Open Track day. Wheel to wheel mandates water, and no glycol based coolants.

Still don't understand what trees are doing ANYWHERE near OR FAR from the racing surface. I've taken T8/T9 hundreds of times and never noticed trees...just grass and sandy runoff, so the trees must have been a 50-100 yards away or more??

    Official notification:

As you may have heard by now, there was an incident during our Driver’s Ed event Saturday at Carolina Motorsports Park that resulted in a fatality. The vehicle in which Tom Norby was instructing went off track and impacted a tree. Fire/Rescue and EMT responded immediately, however Tom died of his injuries at the scene.

Tom was a Carolinas Region PCA member and served as a Driver's Ed Instructor, having completed the PCA National Driver's Education Instructor training. He was 58.

This is a difficult time for everyone, especially Tom’s family. Please keep Tom's wife Paula and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

A visitation with the family will be held in Charlotte, NC at Harry and Bryant Co., 500 Providence Rd., on Wednesday, March 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. The memorial service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, where he was a member, 1000 E. Morehead St., Charlotte, NC, on Thursday, March 11, at 4:30 p.m.

I have vids of similar incidents but they weren't traveling nearly as fast as a 930 is capable of so they didn't make it into the trees.

ANYTHING can happen, there have been countless amounts of cars that have ended up over walls in the woods at Road Atlanta.

You know if you are wrong they can sue you for that right. I am not sure if anything has been released yet but just saying. I doubt they will come on to IA and find out some how.

EDIT: I just read up the page and saw the Official release

seriously people, just because there is a bit of runoff or a small guardrail or something doesn't mean it is anywhere near safe. especially if the surface is grass, a little moisture and your car almost feels like its speeding up when you go 4 off. Racing and track driving is inherently dangerous no matter where it is. be safe out there. both feet in and hands off the wheel before impact.
    RIP

what was he impaled by? does anyone know? i hate to ask that question but just curious to know if it was the cage.

The car had all the proper safety equipment, cage...etc..etc. The passenger was impaled by the tree and died instantly. Really very sad, and my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

With regards to anything can happen....this is a sobering reminder of just how dangerous this sport can be and the risk that everyone takes while doing it.

When looking at arial shots of the track, I now see that the tree line is way too close to the racing surface between T8 and T9, especially given the very high speeds achieved in this area.

Yeah but almost every track could probably say that. Almost every turn at Road Atlanta has trees right off the track.

True, but there are no unimpeded straight shots to the tree line at RA. Tons of tires, walls and other things in the way. I am not naive enough to think that an airborne car can't leave the track and strike a tree. In fact, trees have caused more deaths in motorsports than just about anything else.

    True but you'd be surprised at turn 2, 3, 4, and 6.

We are all saying basically the same thing. Other difference is that RA puts up tire stacks, sand traps and walls to protect drivers from the trees. CMP doesn't and that's what contributed to this fatality.
