I make sure I'm not a pain when I go out to eat, just b/c I know the kinda shit servers put up with. And I usually tip really well (that's how we make our money, people), but if a waiter/waitress is just really crappy and doesn't even fill up my drink or come by to check on us, then she/he doesn't get tipped well.
