The NOPI era you're referring to, I assume, is the late '90's into the 2000's, yes? Those aren't years to brag about, lolol. And Honda couldn't have been reborn if it never died.
I don't know about a Honda being easier to work on. My Neon was a cinch to work on. And it lasted me 10 years (racing SCCA and all) so it was quite the reliable mode of transportation.
