Actually a lot of the "bad" photos that everyone keeps downplaying of theirs, end up looking a HELL of a lot better than a lot of the pictures you see in mainstream car magazines. I would rather see a lot of yalls photos in mags, than the shitty boring pictures that I see almost 100% of the time.

im not saying stick to IA for criticism, but i was saying you can only go soo far off people telling you what to do, and the rest.. is just talent.

alot of the time its about who you know and where you live more than the end product when it comes to getting published.

go for it man, diesel station you might not even get one reply but keep making threads there as you shoot and then people will start replying and it will be some quality responses for the most part.

that is very true. no matter how much people try and help you if you just have zero talent for it, you wont make it.

trying a couple more here. Again, I have never been into editing too much. Heck, I just bought my first DSLR this past March. I need to get out my old SLR 35mm and have some fun with them. I have a Yashica that is older than me (36) that takes some interesting photos.

I like the discussion that has developed in this thread though.

Out of curiousity, what do you find appealing about those two photos?

Actually, it's not the subject, but the depth I was playing with. Like I said, I hadn't touched a SLR in about six years and getting my hands back into it for some fun.

So you're saying the only thing appealing about the photos is the aperture? Not the subject or composition or lighting or background...the only thing appealing is the f/stop?

Yeah because there is so much shit on there now. I was embarrassed to post my stuff on there but I learned from the critiques of others photos and what not to do before I started posting...lol.

Go back a couple years on the threads and there is almost ALL killer work.

So your appreciation for the guys on the photography site..is what give you inspiration. But it may not work for everyone... see how that works! Its like telling someone how to think, or how to feel about something... its impossible!
I don't need any inspiration at all. The OP did. Again, if you want to argue with me that THIS.....IA....is THE place to get inspired by the photography being posted, then I say that you are not well versed on what a good picture is since it seems just about every day someone posts a bad picture and all the nutswingers call it "great". That's a false positive. If you guys want to stick your head in the sand and say it's "art" or "cool to you", then fine. But if you truly want inspiration, then go to where there are better people than you, not worse.

Just a couple of pictures I took that I thought were not that bad. Like i said, I'm not a pro, don't pretend to be, and definitley not a a critic of anyones work. I find it more difficult to get a good picture of a "model", be it car, animal or what, than I do a scenic shot.

The beauty of digital. I can shoot all I want, figure out what small things work, and make notes as I go along. I don't put a lot of thought into it. But I welcome advice and suggestions.

Not trying to be an ass, I'm just curious if what you captured is what you envisioned before you took the shot.

SLR, 35mm, disposable, cell phone camera, point & shoot, DSLR, etc. doesn't matter when it comes to composition. The subject doesn't even matter when it comes to composition...even though the S2000 with a hardtop is one of the sexiest cars built in the past decade.

What were the settings? I'm curious what the body was too, something killed the image quality to where I can't even find the focus point on the second shot. Almost seems like it was post processing or the way the image was saved more than the camera though.

No worries. I don't think i was going for anyparticular look there. I know what you mean though. When I look at the photo through Canons software, it looks alright, but once I see it posted, it loses something.

1/250 F10 Body was a Canon XSi Lens was a freebie hand-me-down Sigma at 300mm.

I know what you mean about composition. There is a guy out there I saw that is making world class art using his cell phone.
I am picking up a Canon 50mm soon, to take the zoom out of play and work on composition more. definitley open to suggestions there too.

Yup this is why I am not posting any. It is a hobby for me and I am still learning a lot. The OG's are right, just post something up on the photogs forums and you will be humbled immediately. If you want to learn then def go to the source. I've learned so much more through those sites than I ever thought

There's basic rules for composing a shot, like the Rule of 1/3rd's, then always want to be aware of any distractions in the background, ie: random trees and fence posts sticking out of the roof.

Car shots will almost always look better if they are lower in the frame...like in-line with the lower 1/3rd. It prevents the "center syndrome". Also holding the camera lower than eye level will always prevent a shot from looking like a thumbnail in a Autotrader, giving the car a more aggressive and attractive stance. How low to go depends how close to the car the camera is and what focal length OR go the other way and get really high looking down. Eye level shots are almost always unattractive...unless you're a 3' tall midget.

i figured u would have a cool head and discuss. but you went off and turned into an argument. you suggested looking to other pros on a photo site. which is cool, and does help. but its only gonna get u so far like i said to chad. i didnt say anything about ia is the place for motivation, shitty pic is a shitty pic. and u can tell when a person is putting an effort into being creative. i was saying that you cant base peoples motivation on their skill. just because i say you can get motivation from anything u tell me i dont have a know of a good photo. i cant tell you what you like so how can u tell anyone else? just like any talent or trade it takes time and motivation can come from your peers on ia or some guy on aphoto forum. but that wont make or break your talent.

Honestly, I like the challenge of taking pictures. I enjoy trying to accomplish an idea...but I know my place (not going to quit my day job to take pics lol) and that what I'm doing is for my own personal satisfaction. Hell, I don't even use a DSLR, but I like that challenge just as much. I would post more pics, but I'm already under the impression that I'm just going to be another guy post average pics. So unless I feel really proud of a shot, I don't bother posting. Personally, I feel like I know that I'm looking at and what makes the difference between a generic, plain shot and one that captivates FWIW.

With that said, there are some of the ones I do feel good about.....though I've never really had the "Big Shots" here give me much feedback....so....

Equipment- Canon PowerShot S5 and some dinky tripod.

Just start by using your phone, you'll be sure to get a lof "nice pic" comments by posting them on here. O make sure to take the pics in your driveway, while standing 6ft away from the driver's front of the car...and do it at night so you get that really cool "old picture" quality

Bingo. Cameras are just boxes that gather light and record the info. That shot with a Canon p&s is better than most of the statics posted here with a DSLR. A big DSLR only gets you harassment when out in the field anyways.

In my opinion, lighting is the number 1 most important factor. Knowing how to adjust the camera according to the lighting is 2nd. Then composing the shot is 3rd.

You've been with me when we're waiting for that perfect 5-10 minute window for the sun to go behind the horizon using the sky as a giant reflector. Too early and you have harsh spots on the car, too late and the car will look dull and flat.

Regarding that photo, I would edit out the trash that's directly in front of the drivers door then crop an inch from the bottom and right sides so the car isn't centered...

The clone stamp works wonders for cleaning up random trash.

With the high resolution cameras (8mp+) tightening up the subject in a frame isn't as important...you can simply crop it how you want in post processing and still have a crisp subject.

The lighting is perfect on that shot though!

    Yup
I'm still learning my way around GIMP. Next thing for me is layering.

Here is how that picture looked before any editing (resized for uploading though)...
