Default Today is a sad day

Yep, I couldn't even start it to move it and wash it or take pics

    E34 +25mph + avoiding collision + curb = ownage.

I'm getting quotes to fix the steering box at $2700 not even including the body damage

It's up to insurance to see what they want to do with it now

DOOOD! call my shop tomorrow and ask for a quote, ill see if i can get my boss to give a little percentage discount.
a co-worker had a 95 sport 6 speed that he pretty much mechanically restored, he sold it to a guy who smiled at his asking price of 14 stacks.
iirc, his COST, not retail, was like $800 on the steering box... but $2700 is f-ing retarded. is it JUST the box? or are the drag link and rod ends screwed too?

PM for my shops number if you want to get an estimate. if it will keep the car out of the junk yard, im sure my boss will have at least SOME pity on you. he like lives by the roundel, i swear...

The body damage isn't bad. It's the mechanical.

Exterior is just busted bumper, scratched fenders, busted fog, curbed wheel.

Mechanically, both control arms, tie rod assembly, steering box, and both strut mounts.

A steering box for this car is $2,000 btw. Not cheap, and the I would be terrified to the install myself.

    It's a 94 540i which I have converted manual transmission.

Stock it would retail for 3500ish.

I just don't see how insurance could cover a steering box and not total the thing.

Yea, I assume they'll just total it if the rack will cost them $2700 on average without a hook up.

so, you mean a NEW box (like from the dealer?), or a rebuilt one?
im not trying to be jerk, but i KNOW my coworker paid less than $1000 for a steering box, it was a rebuilt box, but i think thats all he could get.
is the damage more than just the box? control arms? drag link? strut tube bent? subframe F'd too?
that car is labor intensive to work on, but its not that bad.
and as far as doing it yourself, just support the motor, take the subframe loose, cuss and hate your way through it, its not all that bad

    I was quoted:

    New steering box -$2000
    Tie rod assemblies - $300
    Steering arms - $300
    bumper cover - $387
    alignment - $100
    paint - $365

Part of me wants to attempt to fix it, and the other just wants to say **** it.

2rotor, if you think it would be possible to considerably knock that price down, I am interested.

I'm not sure if it would be safe to drive out there though lol.

i can get you a buyer i bet if you do say F-it...
man, i cant help thinking the mark up on that box is ridiculous, if the quote is +labor, ok, i could see that.

i just cant stand to see a car like that go to the yard over (what is to me) just some front end work...
im sorry you are in such a situation.
    lmk if i can help.

    i here that man,
you could fax the estimate to my shop tomorrow and see what we come up with. they would probably tell you, "this is what we can do on the things on this estimate, if it gets here and (insert other shop here) missed something, there may be other things, but we will let you know before going forward if that happens."

    damn man sorry to hear.

I guess your particular E34 didn't have the curb avoidance option. It's a great feature in these times.
