Yeah they are, subframe and suspension is all interchangeable between e36 and [e36] Z3...both also bolt to the e30.

Just look at RealOEM.com, e36 Z3 is highlighted...

Correct. This is why when buying parts for them it say E36/Z3 most of the time.

This is also why when people post then on bf.c they are listed under 3 series.

    Yes, a E36 318/323/325/328/M3 is different than a E36 Z3/M coupe/M roadster but they are both E36's

Sounds kinda like the Miatas. There is the NA chassis code abd the NB chassis code... but you can swap all the suspension componants, the subframes....hell, even the dash is a direct swap between the two, but, the 90-97 and 99-05 still have a different chassis.

I think this is true for many cars.... 240s works the same way... many suspension and drivetrain components are interchangeable between s13/s14/s15... come to think about it.. most of the interior on all three can be swapped around and are direct bolt ins...Makes it easier for the manufacture I'm guessing...

    z3 are e36 based and z4 are e46 based.

In a similar way that the del sol is eg based. Interchangeable mechanical parts etc...

^i still think just because the subframes and stuff are the same. its still completely different on the outside. so wait just because you can change out the subframes, does that mean since i can change out the wheels of a E46 to a E36 make a E36 a E46... no sorry i can see were its coming from but a Z3 is still a Z3. i fell in love with a black Z3 M-Coupes when i saw one with G-Power. ZOMG i looked around for the higher 313hp Coupes... but yeah. they still wanted close to 30k for them at the time.

The e36 is completely different on the outside compared to a e36 Z3? I would have never guessed that!

The point was people said the Z3 is not an e36 but according to BMW it is. It's no different than comparing the 92-95 Civic to the 94-01 Integra. All the suspension is interchangeable but you can't swap the doors or windows. The platform the car is built on is identical. Just like the e39 5-series and Z8 are identical (same power, drive train, and suspension components as the e39 M5).
