They fell off as of the last couple of seasons.
I see WRC as a total failure soon. It is what? Ford vs Citroen vs Private teams?
Sounds like DTM. Audi VS Benz

There are some big changes coming soon. And yes, it is 2 Ford squads prepared by M-Sport vs 2 Citroen teams prepared by Citroen sport vs privateers.Originally Posted by DinanM3atl
I feel there is a bigger problem than the cars though. The series is too quick to cancel a special stage or even important rallies. For instance the Safari rally was last on the WRC calender in 2002. The Monte Carlo rally hasn't run the the Col de Turini SS at night since the 90's and the Finnish round's Ouninpohja "jump" section gets taken off the calender as well.
This is why the IRC is getting popularity. S2000 spec cars are no where near as fast as a modern WRC car but the series makes up for it with going to these locations. Since the WRC is going to the 2 year 24 round rotational schedule, the Monte Carlo rally was off the WRC 2009 calender and on the IRC calender. The IRC used the Col de Turini properly and ran it twice at night. The IRC will also be going to the Safari rally for round 3 of 2009.
One thing about the DTM. Ever since 2000, the series has been a 2 manu battle. First it was Opel vs Merc and now it is Audi vs Merc. The formula works though as the DTM cars are essentially silhouettes and this provides for very good racing and passing actually happens.
Well DTM is not what it was is what I am saying.
Details on this IRC? S2000 as in Honda S2000 rally car? We talking road rally?
I remember the old WRC. Wish it would come back and filled with manufacturers.

Wow, ok i'll try to make this as simple as possible.Originally Posted by DinanM3atl
1. Old DTM. You mean Group A (1984-1992) or Class 1 (1993-1996)?
I have 60GB+ of video from 1988-1996
2. IRC ....Intercontinental Rally Challenge. A lower formula than the WRC. Kind of like GP2 is to F1.
S2000....Super 2000.....An Fia formula for 2 liter racing created in 2000 to replace FIA Class II in touring car racing. Tarmac, Gravel, Snow/Ice....check my Monte Carlo rally thread.
3. Old WRC was when the cars were driven with bravery instead of precision. Drivers like Colin Mcrae, Carlos Sainz, and Tommi Makinen were from the old school were you drove a car in anger. This is why they were never successful in the "hatchbach" like machines that came out of the WRC post 2000. These new machines are more about being smooth than being fast. Sebastian Loeb on the other hand is talented beyond a point i can explain. No one on earth can beat him. He will be sixth consecutive WRC champ in 2009.
Nice, that would be so fun...
I remember watching WRC on Speed Channel...It was always Subaru VS. Mitsubishi, but you had baddasses like Sebastian Loeb and that one hispanic, older Citroen driver too.
Those were the good ole days, I tell ya.
This thread makes me sad.
I miss them too.![]()
"I get worried when it STOPS leaking."
Ok, don't have to give a sarcastic 'wow' because I stopped following WRC and the 'under series'. Once people started droppnig like flies I stopped watching and don't follow any news at all. Minus that Kimi took a drive in one of the WRC machines.
I mean like Group A! Where BMW E30 M3 was pounding doors with the Merc 190EVO!!! I need the videos... to watch. Please :boobies:
Old WRC was awesome. Literally pounding the hell out of the cars to go faster and faster. As you said now being touchy and careful seems to be the name of the game.

yea, there is a prodrive backed private subaru team, forgot the team name but its on the wrc website.
and subaru dropped out because of the 2010 FIA regulations i believe, it would cost a lot to overhaul their setup.
i think the FIA wants to change the regulations to make some parts such as the rear spoiler, turbo charger, and etc. be able to bolt off in a matter of seconds.
GO RALLY AMERICA!!!!!!
yea!! ken block and travis pastrana are owning it all
I'd like to see either of them make their way into the world level. It could bring rally popularity to a new level and might even bring back the WRC to the usa.Originally Posted by atlxpat

Red Bull has the funds to put something together. I just think with him, there's no reason to move up if he wont be in a competitive/winning car.Originally Posted by atlxpat

this is very true. I would love to see Rally America get bigger. I think they just need to market a little better, and run a few events on the east coast.
I have been a big fan of Rally America for a while. Its nice to see the competition in cars half as prepared as WRC cars
Rally is pretty big in europe, i haven't seen any rally's on tv on our side of the pond
Besides the X games which doesn't count as rallying.Originally Posted by atlxpat

yeah WTF is up with that? all the good racing...gone. I want to see Touring Cars from Europe, Rally, V8 supercars, LMS, DTM, and even SCCA and NASA events.
They should split into two channels. Speed TV and Nascar TV...
Edit for me making it unclear.Originally Posted by matthewAPM
Speedvision was bought by Fox in 2002, the original plan was to make Speedtv into an all Nascar channel. Much of speedvision's old staff didn't want this move so most of them were fired. A few things like Formula 1, Motogp, wsbk, and a little bit of sports car racing coverage has survived by the flag to flag 3am broadcast are long gone.
During last year's Le Mans, i had my laptop connected to my tv so i could stream the race from Eurosport with Radio LeMans on the speakers. I do that with almost everything i watch live now. If i miss it, or a stream doesn't exist, i download it. That is how i watch the WRC, MotoGP, WSBK, FIA GT, V8 Supercar, SuperGT, DTM, F3, A1GP, Andros Trophy, Dakar, and everything else you can think of. I usually have it downloaded in less than 24 hours after the race so i can follow whatever i want properly.

yeah, i knew what you meant from watching rolex 24. started on fox and ended on speed with the same guys the entire time
Wow thats messed up, I rember back in 2000 sitting on the couch of my friends house in gainsville for a month watching the Dakar on speedvision and loseing my job because of it(i did not have cable at my house). And this year all i could get was 30 min of highlights on vs. Im glad someone at least explained why january has to suck again.
2009 Dakar was excellent. Eurosport had two showings each day. 1 from when the cars began getting to the finish and the other for days highlights. That is 1.25 hours a day vs 30 mins on Versus for the coverage of the day before. American TvOriginally Posted by rt132kp61

I think a great WRC stage would be Deals Gap. Tarmac stage starting along the river and then going up to the Lodge.
I still watch vids of Group B. Nothing beats that.

If you're gonna do it, overdo it.

^^ oh yeah. then another stage on 180-60.
and there are some badass dirt roads up there too. i wish the SCCA would run an event there...
Yeap. It's the perfect place too. No houses, no nothing up there. The only thing would be traffic and you could reroute that. It would bring in LOADS of money for the city.Originally Posted by matthewAPM
