A regular properly exposed photo would have been better.

I dont have access to my other pics, but try taking a pic, with the exposures two stops apart from each other, take three, or more if you wish, then merge them and play with the settings, should give you what your looking for.
    Yeah, I know.

I agree! HDR is a good solution when you have subject matter that because of lighting issues need different exposures. I am not a fan of the fuzzy dream like HDR. The only time I use it is to give detail to objects that would have been hidden due to a shadow from a single exposure or to compensate for a bright light source that makes the picture blown out (like a indoor shot with a window that is white because it is over exposed).

Even tho I would not have edited the pictures in the same fashion as you have, I still commend you on trying a new post process.

high dynamic range photography, basically, your shooting the same photo, with a tripod hopefully, at 3 or more different exposures, then merging the photos into one hdr image. the point is to capture all the highlights and lowlights of the image in one pic.
    Yeah, I know.

Tone compressor, but ive been using photoshop lately to do it, its a little bit harder but i want to learn the p/s way, photomatix is just for ease of use. you really dont have to make many adjustments imo. but again, im not a pro and still learning like yourself.
    Yeah, I know.
