What brand headunit? I have the terk units on my alpine and so far so good. They don;t interface well with my pioneer nav unit in the other car though. Just buy a unit so you have direct control through the headunit. The add on FM modulated units just don;t sound as good as direct plug in ones.

your best bet would be to buy Sirius. XM FTL. Not to mention the two company's have merged...
Checkout the sportser 4 or starmate 4 (both sirius pieces) in terms of mobility, any new satellite radio units will come with some kind of integration to your car's antenna. These pieces really do help over Fm mod's of years past.
If you insist on using XM, checkout their lineup and see which unit's features fit what youre looking for. Installation is pretty straight forward with either manufacturer. With Sirius antenna's sometimes you can skimp on where you mount it, as some vehicles allow for an interior installed antenna, however i wouldnt risk mounting the antenna on the inside with an XM antenna, for reception reasons. Both companys come with a cigerette lighter plug for power, but hard wiring allows for a much cleaner install.

They havn't merged yet. There still in negotiations.
The only negotiations are with how everything will actually break down after the merger. DEI has released several pieces of literature stating just that...

The merger also has to be approved due to federal laws.
XM has guaranteed that they will not lose service in the event of a merger, so I believe it is XM that will be purchasing Sirius.
If you want a mobile unit, checkout XM's Nexus or Inno. Both can be installed in vehicles with their car kits, and both have the ability to be portable XM/MP3 players that can store XM programs and MP3 files.
Install is cake if you don't want it hardwired in, but the best install by far is to have it hardwired into your vehicle and get a bracket from pro-fit-intl.com
