is it possible to cut out the 6x9 hole's on a 96 civic coupe and install 10" subs in there place, hell i would settle for 8" subs. i just want a little bass but dont really want to put in the trunk.

sure...its possible. Probably easier with 8s.
Why not a GOOD set of 6x9s with a small amp on them? (NOT my first choice, but definatley "easier")
What you (I think) are asking about is IB (infinite baffle) subs...they will use the trunk AS the enclosure. Not every sub is suited for this application, so you cannot run any 'ole woofer you have laying around. You "can" but might not get desired results.
For best results, you will also want to "seal" as much of the rear deck as possible from the cabin.

Wth kind of sub are they using to where they can use the whole trunk as an enclosure? Sounds to me like that would take some incredible wattage to get the noise produced properly.
Heck I had a couple of 6X9 Kickers that had all the sound I wanted with a 250w Crunch amp.
that is exactly why redgst said every sub in not suited for an IB alignment. I have no clue what the undersde of your rear deck lookds like, but it really shouldnt be all that hard to build a small enclosure into it.Originally Posted by jmmx258

i have a set of JL audio 6x9s with no amp. so if i put a small amp on them would they have more bass. i was thinking i could put 8" subs and build some kind of enclosure under the subs. i really dont want to loose my tension bars but i would for some good sounding bass.
Try the 6x9s, the IB subs work VERY well, but if you want to save $, or weight, this sacrifices both. You def have to separate the trunk area from the cabin, to get max output, so you need to reskin the shelf to cover all the holes. I agree, 6x9s by a reputable company and a small amp is where its at.
btw, Kicker at one point made a speaker called the f69, freeair 6x9...it was just for this purpose. E-bay may have some for the low low.

The Elemental Designs Eu-700 might be good for this situation, it would be easy to fit some 6.5-7'' drivers there, and they are relatively cheap and do pretty well on the low end for their price. www.edesignaudio.com
I know that various companys make 6x9 subs. You could try for those also.

a basslink set up would save the space in the trunk and the amp is built in.... just givin u an idea...
this is exactly what i want to do. im not too into subs and big bass. just want a lil thump. im in a 240 with 6.5"s all around?
My friend had some 6x9s that were crazy with bass and I swore he had a system in his car but it was just 6x9's. I wll find out what kind at work.
