    Default Drinking Age (pt.2)

we had this discussion a year ago, but only got a page and a half discussion, so lets get this one better...

what do you feel about teh drinking age should it be lowered/raised/stay the same?

me personally i feel that it should be lowered to 18 OR the draft/voting age should be raised to 21, they should all be the same.

if you are old enough to make decisions about the country, you should be able to make a decision about your own alcohol consumption

I agree. If I'm old enough to kill for my country I'm old enough to drink a beer while doing it.

You can drink beer when you're 18 in the army.

I dont know if anyone pointed this out...since i didnt read the other pages...but this point is valid. Seeing as how if you are 18-20 and in the military you have the legal right to drink. Thats what you see 18-20 year olds buying liguor and such on a Military ID becuase they are allowed, one perk if you join the military under the age of 21!!!!!!!

Just thought i would give my

I think they should raise the drinking age! Why? Because it not as fun drinking legally as it is illegally! Gives me a few more years to break the law.

The drinking age should stay the same, there are enough DUIs out there without allowing a younger more immature crowd to purchase it legally. I was drinkin was I was like 16 but now that Im a little bit older I can see the bigger picture. I do see the point about joining the military, but defending the freedom of our country and getting shit faced at bars should not go hand in hand.

I think it's fine where it is. I know it's lower in Europe but people in Europe use a whole lot more public transportation than we do and our culture of drinking is very different.

I do strongly think the driving age should be raised though.

It was 21 after prohibition and then lowered in some states to 18 or 19 in the 70's. This was right around when the voting age was lowered to 18 as well, people thought the same "if you can vote, you can drink". The idea didn't work too well. Studies showed huge increases in teenage DUI's and accidents and the age was raised again in most states. The the federal government stepped in and required it to be raised up to 21 all over or the state would lose certain funding.

If the states want to stand on their own, that is one thing but you can't take money and be part of a country and not follow the greater laws of the country. It's a fine line and a pretty controversial one in some issues. I agree that states make their own laws but only when upholding that law does not require federal money. It wasn't a huge amount of money and only related to highway funding, if they really wanted to do without it, I'm sure some states could have.

It probably won't ever be because the correlation of the three are not the same.

Yes, you can get killed while serving, but a DUI kills too. Voting won't ever kill you unless you vote Democrat....

In other words, the relationship between the three is totally different and the only connection is age.

    corrected lol

but anyways if you can make decisions about your country's leader why cant you make your own decisions on how much to drink?

i believe... there shouldn't be an age limit.. like europe...
we'll have drunk kids walking around everywhere! XD

but 18 is used for everything else, so they should go ahead and set it as the age limit for drinking

You used to be able to... years ago. Now the military uses the drinking age of the state they are in and that's 21. You can buy beer on Sunday in places that don't sell on Sundays though.... we used to do it in SC all the time. I've lived most of my life less than 20 miles from Fort Jackson.

^^^guess that's why guy was arguing you can drink if you're 18, because wouldn't the "local" law apply if you're serving abroad somewhere?

Yes, if you are stations in whatever country... you use their drinking age... but I don't really see how that matters when you just walk off base and it's the same.

I agree, but if you serve your country as a soldier or etc. you should be able to drink at the age of 18. Everyone else will have to wait until 21.

i don't.... i mean i think the drinking age can stay the same or go lower... kids do it now just like anything else illegal.

but the reasoning on that just isn't legit to me, i'm sorry. I don't think making decisions on who runs the country allows you to drink. I mean in that case vote for a senator or someone in a federal office that wants to lower the voting age.
