    Default Drinking Age (pt.2)

we had this discussion a year ago, but only got a page and a half discussion, so lets get this one better...

what do you feel about teh drinking age should it be lowered/raised/stay the same?

me personally i feel that it should be lowered to 18 OR the draft/voting age should be raised to 21, they should all be the same.

if you are old enough to make decisions about the country, you should be able to make a decision about your own alcohol consumption

I agree. If I'm old enough to kill for my country I'm old enough to drink a beer while doing it.

highly agreed with both you guys. thats why many clubs and liqour stores let you purchase alcohol on military ID without even worrying bout age.

I think they should raise the drinking age! Why? Because it not as fun drinking legally as it is illegally! Gives me a few more years to break the law.

The drinking age should stay the same, there are enough DUIs out there without allowing a younger more immature crowd to purchase it legally. I was drinkin was I was like 16 but now that Im a little bit older I can see the bigger picture. I do see the point about joining the military, but defending the freedom of our country and getting shit faced at bars should not go hand in hand.

I think it's fine where it is. I know it's lower in Europe but people in Europe use a whole lot more public transportation than we do and our culture of drinking is very different.

I do strongly think the driving age should be raised though.

Maybe if someone is in the military they should be able to drink, might make more folks join the military, its taught me how to be responsible and I think all males should have to do three years in the military at 18 if they dont go to college.

Lowering it would be silly IMO.

I agree that if you serve your country you SHOULD be able to legally drink a beer, but it's a simple fact that you're not fully cooked at 21 let alone at 18.

Most underage drinkers drink to excess, binge, because they are IMMATURE....it has nothing to do with legal or not legal. When I drank and was underage, getting blitz was the purpose otherwise why risk getting caught. We all thought is was "cool" to get shit faced and puke. Right of passage, like it or not. I don't know of a single person that looks back at anyone's underage drinking and thinks to themselves, "wow, I was cool then...". It's usually the opposite.

Over 21 people get drunk and act stupid all the time, absolutely. But as your age increases and the maturity level rises, you begin to see that drinking to get drunk each and everytime is overrated. You cannot expect 18 yr olds to have the mindset and maturity level it takes to control alcohol consumption w/o setting some kind of boundary. Right now is the law that serves as a boundary. Look at how many of us got carried out of a bar the day we turned 21.......I know I did. Why? Cause that's what I thought was fun at the time. Just like 99% of 21 yr olds.

What's the big deal anyway? How many people woke up hungover the day after their 21st birthday and asked, "that's it?". Just like a new GF, the initial fun is because it's new. After the fun wears off, she's either gonna be a keeper or not.

Personally, I was just like some of you younger guys when I was young too.....Couldn't wait until I turned 21 to be able to "legally" drink. But trust me, after you get there it's not any different than getting in your car and driving. We all counted the days until 15-16 to drive, now it's just what we do. Nothing too special 99% of the time, same goes for drinking.

I'll get off my soapbox now.

Seriously, this will never really happen because the public feels too strongly that the majority of 18 yr olds just aren't capable of the responsability. Ironically enough, you can get on a plane from Atl and in 3 short hours be somewhere where it is perfectly legal for 18yr old to drink. The irony is that it's legal there, but it's not that big a deal for the 18yr olds. It's just another thing.

nobody is forced to do anything in the military, thats why so many hippies feel so sorry for the people in the war, because they feel we were forced to come here, we ALL volunteered our services to our country knowing the risks when we did it.

I do see your point, but in the Armed Forces you always have someone higher up in the chain of command overseeing you too. You don't just go rouge and Rambo and start shooting just for kicks.

If you turn all the 18 yr olds loose, who is going to be overseeing them? The Armed Forces serve as defacto parent to their soldiers and set rules for them and oversee them. There is no such thing in the general public, especially if the law backs them up.

I do see what you're saying though.

Remember, noone has been drafted into the Armed Forces since Vietnam over 30 yrs ago. So in essence, noone is "forced" to die for their country.....they volunteer.

I think that if you are in the Armed Forces.....maybe they should just let you drink on the base or while stationed somewhere (although most places where we have military bases I think have a legal drinking age of 18 anyway ) as a perk for serving your country.

well you need to check again apparently

my dad was almost drafted for vietnam and the age in california at that time was 21 he didnt get drafted because they stopped the draft 2 months before his birthdate was called on.

It was 21 after prohibition and then lowered in some states to 18 or 19 in the 70's. This was right around when the voting age was lowered to 18 as well, people thought the same "if you can vote, you can drink". The idea didn't work too well. Studies showed huge increases in teenage DUI's and accidents and the age was raised again in most states. The the federal government stepped in and required it to be raised up to 21 all over or the state would lose certain funding.

If the states want to stand on their own, that is one thing but you can't take money and be part of a country and not follow the greater laws of the country. It's a fine line and a pretty controversial one in some issues. I agree that states make their own laws but only when upholding that law does not require federal money. It wasn't a huge amount of money and only related to highway funding, if they really wanted to do without it, I'm sure some states could have.
