You generally won't find much good shit, though there are sometimes good furniture finds.

it would be fun to do if i was retired, and needed something to keep me busy.

but from what i understand, you HAVE to take everything from the unit (not a big deal if u can jsut take most of it to a dump)
i think it would be fun, but its a risk(always) and if u see something good, chances are others have also, and you will pay for it.

i guess having time, resources(truck, storage, places and sites to sell items) and a sharp eyesight is all it comes down to.
And miles to go before I sleep,

my wife's family owns about 200+ storage units, Ive never seen anything worth a shit in one of those auctions, maybe a few pieces of furniture but that's about it.

Theres actually people whos business is to buy up storage units and resell the good shit they find. Some make a good amount of money doing it. I used to work at a storage place, and every time we had an auction this one same dude always showed up. He generally made out pretty well with shit.

Yeah.. they are on saturdays.. they just open the door and start bids at 10 bucks or whatever.. but you can't go in and look around.. so its kinda hit or miss.. but there are some cool shit in some of them.. with people loosing jobs and stuff I bet there is a lot to be had.

I have done a couple of them checkin it out they have been profitable but it takes a lot of time! Def not easy to do with a full time job. I wrote a small ebook about the basics and some of my experiences/finds http://www.storageunitauctions.synthasite.com/

that's a very valid point...honestly i've never heard of them, but this statement right here makes me want to look into it. not even with people just losing their jobs, but also losing their homes. imagine how much "decent" stuff is in storage.

my question is, do the storage companies host these auctions when people can't pay the fees? or is it something the unit owners do? i'm assuming it's a little of both...but just curious.

EDIT: nevermind...my question was answered by the above poster's link.
