Default kiva.org - Anyone heard of it?

A friend told me about a site she had heard of from a classmate. It's kiva.org. Apparently the point is for you to make small loans to people in 3rd world countries so they can start businesses or add to an already existing business. The guy who told my friend about it said he loaned someone in africa $25 to buy a cow lolol. Anyway, it seems like a cool idea and I was thinking about donating some money if it is legit. Has anyone here heard of it?

I wasn't sure where to post this, so since it's about money I figured wallstreet would be as good as any place to post it.

At one point you said lend and another point you said donate so im not sure which one you want to do. If you want to lend money with to potential to earn a return on it you can use a site call prosper.com, its a really cool site where you can lend money to people and see their credit worthiness to determine the interest rate. If you just want to donate money i guess u could use that site just know you could be donating to a crook.

well lending would be ideal if there was a chance of actually getting my money back, but at the same time, if I didn't get my money back, I would just consider it a donation. I wasn't planning on giving any more than $50-100...

I have heard of something like this. I think I saw it on MSNBC or something. Not sure if this is the same site but if it is it's legit.
