Thread: 1993 Mazda RX7 (Pic heavy)

Default 1993 Mazda RX7 (Pic heavy)

Well, I'm bored, so here we go.

First off, I'd like to say, I bought the car back in December, 2010 already swapped, so I don't take credit for doing the swap.

How it was when I first bought it

    Specs:

    -1998 Camaro SS LS1 w. T56 6speed (working OBDII port)
-ECU Serviced - removed VATS, two o2's... little stuff
    -Granny Speed Shop Subframe
    -Granny Speed Shop Transmission Crossmember
    -Granny Speed Shop Torque Arm
    -Granny Speed Shop Engine Mounts
    -Granny Speed Shop Driveshaft
    -RPS Stage 3 Clutch
    -CYN-R-G Segmented Flywheel
    -Wilwood 7/8ths Master Cylinder
-Hinson Super Cars Master Cylinder Adapter
    -JTR Long Tube headers
    -3" Off road Y Pipe w. V-bands
    -3" HKS Hi-Power Cat-back
    -G.E.T. Coilovers
    - Other little stuff.

The day after I brought it home, I went up to Atlanta to pick up a set of wheels from another member here on the boards. The day after that a friend and I started on getting the fitment right.

Rolling the fenders so I could fit my new wheels

    Wheels/specs : WedsSport SA70 17x9+20 18x10+18

Fitment pictures for the fitment whores.

    Front fitment was just ok.

I was pretty happy with the rear fitment.

Basically, It stayed this way, with little changes, for about a year.

Well, after about a year, I got bored of the car, changed a few things up. (most of the work was done in the dark after work, so I don't have many pictures of the work :/ sorry.)

I changed a few things up with the motor, along with the body.

Motor wise, with the help of friends, we did a heads/cam swap.

    New motor specs:

Heads: TSP PRC Stage 2.5 Heads
    Cam: TSP MS3
Intake manifold: BBK SSI Ported and polished. The mouth was ported to 92mm to accommodate for the throttle body, and the runners were ported to match the ports of the heads
    Throttle Body: PTM 92mm

I had to get a custom adapter made as well for the throttle body to work. The throttle body was 4 bolt, and the intake was 3. so i took it to a local machine shop, and had a .5" spacer/adapter made.

And a pic with the throttle body on.

Engine Bay pic: (messy, its still a work in progress)

Well, long story short, The car is finally ready to be tuned, we start tuning it, and fry the 98 pcm, which if you dont have any experience with gm engine control, suck in short.

Instead of buying another 98 pcm, I searched a ls1 forum for a nice 99-02 pcm and decided to re-pin my harness once I find one. After about a month of searching, I found a really nice 2002 pcm, and buy it. So the fun began. (again, no pics, sorry guys) So I started to re-pin my harness, which is about 200 wires. It took me about a month to do, working on it off and on. Now I'm just waiting to buy a couple more things, and put in my rod bolts, twin scroll timing chain, and ported and shimmed ls2 oil pump. Then it will be time to tune, and have back on the road again! I'm hoping to have it out at KMS in march, I wont have everything done to it I'm working on, but at least the motor will be where I want it.

I'm also working on doing some things with the body and suspension.

As far as the body, I'm working on doing a wide body.

Here's a couple pictures of the progress:

The first thing I bought was this origin style rear bumper, i figured i'm going to cut it up anyways, so no point in buying the real thing.

Then I traded a re-amemiya style rear diffuser I had for a set of 50mm origin over fenders. The bumper, and over fenders didnt clear each other, like I suspected, so the cutting began.

    First cut.

I dont really have pictures of what I did of the bumper, but i cut the piece of the over fender that drops down straight with the line of the bumper, and then molded the piece of the over fender into the bumper. On a side note, I got rid of my Hi power and Cut and welded the tip of an Isis 4" blast pipe on it to help fill the giant hole for the exhaust that was cut by the PO. still Have to go back, and glass part of what he cut.

    near finished product

    current pic of the exhaust:

doing the same thing with the side skirts

Cut the skirt where i wanted the rest of the over fender

Stripped down past the gel coat to the fiberglass

first layer of fiberglass, just to hold it in place. re-enforced the back, and smoothed the front

no finished result pics of the skirt yet.

junk in the trunk. (sitting high because i haven't cut my quarter panels yet, so i couldn't let it all the way down off the jack)

Traded my stock hood for a shine spec gt hood a few days ago, pretty excited about this considering it was local, and I've been wanting one for a while.

    Other shiz.

Ordered my gauges, didnt want to run a quad pillar gauge pod, so made a home depot racing special

on fd's theres a speaker in the center of the dash, I took all of that out, made a base plate, and mounted my "gauge pods" on the plate i made for the hole.

Gauges (in order) are STRI Oil pressure, Oil temp, Coolant temp, and AEM Uego Wideband

I threw this one together, I plan on making a much cleaner one

A lot of people say that. The wide body is no where near done. Once it's done, I'm pretty sure people will like it better. pulled my brake calipers off today. sending them out to have some gangsta ass shit done to them

Also got bored, so I played with my fitment for the new tires

little more progress from the last week or so...

picked up my new to me oil cooler, still have to figure out where/how i want to mount it.

also put my new knuckles on.

    before:

    knuckles off...

i'll post an after pic tomorrow. still need to get tie rod ends at least though. still better than stock...

basically waiting to get my brakes back before i can do much else to it right now, so i havnt really messed with it a ton. i may make a bash bar soon, but for the most part, i'm at a stand still.

I personally thought it looked great when you first bought it and when you added the Wedsports. Once you started tearing into the body you lost me. None the less I bet its a blast to drive

thanks, the wide body is still a work in progress. it'll look pretty nice once its done, it still has a looong ways to go. it wasnt too bad before. the new setup should def. be more fun though!

The car is pretty much at a stand still right now. Just been playing around with the widebody some. Here's a couple pics of the progress. (it still has a long ways to go; also, everything is just taped on, so that's why the lines aren't quite lined up for the most part.)

Hopefully I'll get my brakes back soon, and finish up the motor and get it running. I plan on driving at kms in march, the wide body most likely wont be on it though. I'm shooting to have the wide body at least on by the time IA comes around in april. Like I said though, it has a long ways to go. Still need the other set of side skirts, and front fenders, and to finish the body work, which is getting somewhat close to being done on the passenger's side at least.

Hey guys, i'm still around, I have a few more progress pics to show, and a couple more things for the car. but between the rain, and breaking my collar bone, it's slowed me down a lot. especally since its my left collar bone and i'm left handed -___- i'll try to get pictures of some of the progress some time next week

ok guys, heres a quick update:

Picked up a couple new pieces for the wide body. Finally found a set of Origin front fenders within reasionable driving distance, and they were brand new, so that was a plus. also fabbed up a QUICK bracket so i know how to build my lines for my oil cooler, IE what fittings to use, how much line I need etc... Also got a sexy style tail light cover, which I couldnt be more excited about! We also started to cut my quarter pannels so I can perminantly mount my over fenders.

Just ordered a few parts this afternoon as well:

    -Katech rod bolts
    -Improved racing oil pan baffle
-Improved racing oil cooler adapter w/thermostat
-TSP Twin scroll timing chain set
-Super now outter tie rod ends
    -Pbm tie rod spacers
-Mazdatrix adjustable sway bar end links

As you'll see in some of the pics, I'm still waiting on my brake setup.

Ok, heres a few pics of the progress over the last few weeks

Haha thanks guys, the widebody still has a ways to go, but as far as how many pieces left to get, I still gotta find a roof wing, but thats pretty much it... I might do canards too, idk. then its just a matter of finishing the fiberglass work with the side skirts, and then painting it, and eventually getting wheels. I think I'm going to have to remove the heads again to upgrade my lifters, so I have to pretty much re-do everything I've already done, but I dont want to cut any corners with this car. Picked up a fairly small oil cooler today (stock 2011 chevy 1500 cooler) that I'm going to make my diff cooler. still debating if I want to do a trans cooler for my t56, and if I want to put a small PS cooler on it once I get power steering back in it or not too.

The first of the parts started to come in today. i dont really plan on getting any other parts until next week. might get my timing chain later this week, but still...

improved racing oil pan baffle and thermostatic oil cooler adapter... now i just need to gut the stock thermostat in the fc oil cooler, and then have the an lines made.

also found a crash bar i really like... going to base my crash bar off of this one.

Woop! Found my diff bushings finally! Been searching for these things for like 6 months now lol... better put them in the car before I lose them again -__-

got a few more parts today!

    Katech rod bolts

    Super now tie rod ends

Mazdatrix adjustable sway bar end links

Just waiting on my twin scroll timing chain to come in, then I can start putting all the bottom end stuff in! Waiting on my tie rod spacers to come in still, but for the most part, I have everything now. Still need to make a summit trip, and get my diff pump to finish my diff cooler, and to get new head gaskets, and head bolts as well.

haha yeah, i kinda jumped in with little experience as far as fibergalss. i have done all i can to make sure i have a little body filler as possible on the car though. not caking on a ton of bondo or anything. so it should look ok. once you get right on top of it, my inexperience will probably show, but watching from the side at a drift event, it'll look fine

Update: pulled the motor today, checked everything out, a lot of things are not how they should be, tearing down to bare block and starting over fresh with all new bearings. so far no plans to upgrade pistons/rods/crank, but that may end up changing. Just kinda have to play it by ear.

  31. #31

Haven't posted on here in a while, so heres a little update. The block, heads, and crank will be ready to be picked up tomorrow. I got the deck re-surfaced, and the walls honed, the heads cleaned up a bit, and re-surfaced, the crank polished a thousandths over. Picking up main and rod bearings, arp main bolts, dimond pistons, a competition clutch plate, and flywheel segments on saturday. Then back to re-assembling the motor. I also picked up a roof wing i did some work to, i'll post pictures of it later today.

Heres a few pics of the oem style roof wing i've been messing with lately. debating doing vortex generators, but cant make up my mind.

the oem roof wing has a tear drop in it to give the rear window squirter on the hatch room. well, my car being a base model chassis didnt have one, so i decided to shave it.

Heres some pictures of the progress

Quick cutouts to give myself an idea what it would look like if i decided to make vortex generators

Still undecided if i want to do vortex generators or not. If i build a rear diffuser to go along with it, I think it would look pretty good. But debating if I want to put all of that work into something just for it to eventually get smashed up. Hopefully the rest of my internals get shipped to me sometime this week so we can start putting the motor back together.

Haha, honestly, I'm not a big fan of them either. It's Just the most cost effective/reliable setup for me. I'd much rather still have a 13brew in it, or even a 2jz over the ls1, but like i said, it just makes more sense for me to have the sbc in it.

Progress has been pretty slow lately. Honestly lost motivation to mess around with it. I'm starting to piddle with it again... started building my headlights, and mounted most of the wide body.

Nearly everything is mounted... Still need to attach the side skirt and rear bumper to the over fenders where they meet, and still have to figure out a better way to mount my tail light cover other than double sided tape. Already wanting to change up the side skirts some, and I'm not feeling the front bumper anymore at all. Going to get a version select V2 when the opportunity arises. In the mean time, time to start prepping the car for paint!

Decided to ditch the green and go battleship gray for now.. I'm sure I'll end up re-painting it some other color shortly after it's running again, but this will do for now. the only pieces I had prepped were my roof wing, and tail light cover... Going to prep my hood for paint this afternoon and spray it tomorrow after work.
