Default Oldstech Build thread... Oldsmobile V8 Power

It is 1987 Camaro v-6 coupe body. It should weigh alittle less then 3100lbs (no options)
The engine is a 1984 Olds 307 with 5A heads
I overhaul it around 5 or 6 years ago I might have 5,000 miles since then
The cranks was turned and reinstalled with clevite 77 bearings
Honed and reringed with speed pro rings
New cam bearings and a Comp Cam 268H .454./.454
The heads were recondition (no port or nothing. Just new seals and valve grinding)
And whateva is usually with a typical rebuild

    External:
    Edelbrock performer rpm intake
    K&N Airfilter
Holley 670cfm Street Avenger, yellow spring on the vacuum sec
Accel Blueprint dist with MSD guts and Cap with light springs
Msd 6AL box with complete HEI Kit and blaster 2 coil
Msd 8.5mm wires and NGK plugs gapped to .040
Hedman Headers, 2.5 piping, X-pipe, and 2 dynomax Super Turbos mufflers
No A/c, No Smog Pump, No Emission
Electric Fan and Electric Fuel Pump pressure set to 6psi

    Driveline:
    1991 Th-700r4
    Front/Rear OEM springs
    B&M Rachet Shifter
1991 10 bolt (7.625) with 28 spline and 3.23 LSD (but the LSD is worn out)
Aluminium Drums and Aluminium rims with 275/60/15 in rear and 215/65/15 on the Front

Well, at 5:00pm on Feb 04, 2008. The CamarOlds with a 307 was put on the dyno. For 3 runs.
I have to say I was disappointed but not really surprise.

My dyno sheet doesn't quote my max hp/torque at what rpm. You have to look at the graph. Max hp on every run was around 4600rpm and max torque was around 3200rpm. He rev till 5,000rpm but the power was dropping off after 4600rpm anyways.

    Run 1 Max Power= 163.69 Max Torque= 215.75
    Run 2 Max Power= 166.00 Max Torque= 217.19
    Run 3 Max Power= 165.65 Max Torque= 218.08

    Run Conditions: 66.05 F, 29.50in-hg, Humidity 6%, SAE: 0.98

The reason for the changes in number I was playing with the Air/Fuel Mixture screw. His machine said I was running lean. But we found out his machine was messed up.

I believe I could get more power if, I installed a smaller carb (Im running a 670cfm holley now) A better cam. And a good tune up (at idle my tach will spike every so often think I need new wires)

Now the stock 307 puts out 150hp and 250 ft lbs of torque. But the part ppls don't realize is them numbers are from the factory on a engine dyno. And on a RWD car you can lose 20-40% of power through the drivetrain. So really if you took a car with this engine stock to a chassic dyno it would put out around 105 rwhp and 175 ft lbs of torque. And I got 166 rwhp and 218 ft lbs of torque. And at the crank I would get around 215 hp and 310 ft lbs of torque

And running a near perfect race at the track calculates to 14.80 @92MPH in the 1/4 mile. Assuming your race weight is 3400LBs.

PM replied too... If its chebby parts... I really dont care for them. I fact I have some chebby aftermarket vortec heads and a edelbrock hi rise intake I need to sell that I brought when I was into chevy.

But if you are talking Oldsmobile then we can talk. But since you put 305 on the title of the pm. I figure you are talking chevy

Im on a mission man. Im goin this weekend and I still got to get my parts I need off of it. Put a new oil pan gasket and paint it black. Hopefully that will be completed tommarrow. Then Thrus I got to get a exhaust manifold and a pulley from the junk yard. Then I ready to go. I pose to be at the guys house at 8:00amin the morning this coming saturday ready to start removing the engine.

OOO yeah I almost. I got another Olds 455 bare block with main caps, crank, G heads, and headers coming tomarrow. I got some chevy parts he needs. And I need his heads for the running 455 Im getting this weekend. But the parts i got are worth a hell of alot more then the whole package he is trading me. But he is delivering from stone mountain. So I don't feel as bad on me being on the loseing side.

Well, another good day. I had to go to the OBGYN with my wife. Everything is normal. Then I had 2 1/2 hours before I had to go to the dentist. So my wife and I swung by the johnson junk yard. I grabbed a passenger side exhaust manifold and a crank pulley. Then went to the dentist for a cleaning and get me on a treatment plan. So now I got alot of work to do on my tooth. And plus the end of the month Im getting a tooth pulled. Then I went home and painted the engine black. OOO I forgot the best part, the guy from craigslist was pose to meet me to trade so I can get my heads. He screwed me again and ain't anwsering the phone. Now I done with that. Im going another route. But anywayz now here are pics.

Now tell me when you find a woman who is 7 month preg. That will turn a wrench in the junk yard with her hubby. ( Im just kidding she is just posing, I don't even think she could reach the bolt I told her to act like she was turning)

    Before

After... It is dry has we I type...

Yeah I think thats one reason I didn't hit my hp goals becuz it was painted chevy orange (I painted it that color when I thought chevy was kewl). OOO yeah. As I was taking the engine apart I found a vacuum tee on my intake UNCAP... So my dyno numbers may be alittle off...

The 307 has a new owner in Alabama But Im a new owner of the baddest engine eva made by Oldsmobile. It was a LONG weekend. Friday we loaded the truck preparing for the trip. According to map quest we had 9 hours and 40 mins of road time ahead of us (We had to go to Montgomery Al to get the 455 then had to go to Eva Al and get two 4wheeler for my cousin then back home). But friday we didn't go to bed till 1am. So we woke up at 8am on saturday and headed to montgomery AL. We got to Montgom AL around 12pm and started swaping engines. By 6pm we was packed and ready to go. We headed to Eva AL. Which was another 2 1/2 hour drive north. We got there around 10pm we got lost a couple of times LOL... We didn't leave his house till around 1:30am. But everything was loaded believe or not. And this was the long one. It took 5 hours to get home. I walked into my bedroom at 6am on Sunday morning. Im extremely tired right now. But I wanted to post this up.

The car we removed the 455 from and drop the 307 in

    The Famous 455... IT MINE!!!!

307 is installed and front clip back on. About to leave now

The 307 in the new owners car.

455 strap down covered and ready for the next stop

It was tight but we made it work. We had to put one of the 4 wheeler on stop of the 455.

The first 4 wheeler had to be put vertical to have enough room for all the parts.

The 455 at my house. Waiting to be installed

Well here are all the parts I gethered so far.
I picked up the Edelbrock Intake Yesterday for $125
The 4160 750cfm Holley Carb, I got 4 yrs ago. I traded for it.
And the Pistons I got for $50 used. They will give me a CR of 9.3:1 without shaving the heads. But i wont use them. I decided Im goin with Speed pro Forged .030 over so I can run some juice to make up for the lack of traction

    HEHE

Looking on Holley's site it is a 4160 (Vacuum Sec 750cfm)

20cc piston. Alot better then the stock 40cc

Well, I got my E heads today. Which was made in 1968-70. They Poses to be the Large Valve ones . I will check them tomorrow. They are getting lot of machine work anywayz. Here is some pics

The Guy who sold me the heads said my year was the weak bottom. I called BS. And had to check. Which required removing the oil pan. And I was right. I have the good Bottom end. I never heard of the bottom end he spoke of in a big block olds. But I had to prove it to myself. But I was happy it was clean tho

Well, I think it is time for a update. Last week I was goin to go to build the 403. So I took my heads to the machine shop to be inspected. Well, they need to be completely rebuilt has i thought which is goin to cost around $1200 (this is including performance mod too). So today I decided to tear my E heads down for the 455. And they are alot better then the 403 heads but are goin to need the same amount of work. So im not goin to spend 1200 dollars on some cast iron heads when Edelbrock are 1,800 dollars shipped. So Im goin to save my pennies and go that route.

So Im just goin to rebuild the smog 455. It will suck, but it will be alot better then the diesel. Im goin to install all the parts I have got right now. But the heads suck so bad that will be the road block. So hopefully when i get back from South America I will have some pics of the progress.

Very nice man! Have fun at S. America man! Sounds like it's going to be an awesome trip! Hopefully I will have enough research to make a move on my hopefully next project...

No one can know about it though...
