The short answer, you cant do it legally at all. The car is not supposed to be here. However, there are ways around STATE laws to register it. Federally, its illegal no way to make it legal

    Detailed answer:

The only car "ALLOWED" to be federally imported is the 1995 GTR or any car 25 years old. If your car isnt one of those 2, its illegal at the FEDERAL LEVEL.

State wise, every state has loop holes. Georgia you cannot Register a Japanese title at all IIRC they recently passed a law that doesnt allow the shorter VIN to be transferred from another state either.

The only thing you can do, is illegal and gray market. You can buy a totalled/scraped car of the same year, swap vin an title and crush the other car. Not legal by any means, but its been done

Japanese VINs are between 10-14 characters. US is 17 characters. They couldn't enter the VIN in the county system even if they wanted to. Has to have a US VIN.

Let us know when you have it registered.

not true. good luck, most dmv people are not skilled or well versed in registering JDM cars.

Ive owned 3 Silvias , i know what is legal.

There are 2 entities when we talk LEGAL.

FEDERAL REGULATIONS (which supercede ANY state/local law) your car is ILLEGAL. IT is NOT supposed to be here and was imported ILLEGALLY. PERIOD. Nothing you say or claim changes that. Just because someone got the car past customs doesnt make it "legal"

STATE REGULATIONS (which are far easier to get past) also, dont mean its "technically legal". You can (as the case was in FLORIDA for many years) pay a fee and register the JAPANESE VIN as a "kit car" or a florida car. Once you obtained the FL title you could transfer it into GA rather easily, circumventing the GA Title Rules.

you cannot walk into a Georgia DMV and register a Japanese imported car using its JDM title. Sorry. the car would have to have been imported LEGALLY, and pass OBD2 Emissions or OBD1, which your car doesnt. (unless its a 1988 SIR HATCHBACK which could possible be overlooked because its 25 years old)

Damn the only reason I got this car was because it was cheap but I guess I'm giving it back to the guy I haven't picked it up yet he only has a deposit I gave him.
The car is a 96 and it was only 4800

Theres no way to "legally title" it. Your only avenue is to purchase a wrecked but not reported 96 civic and vin swap it (illegal)
