    Default 1985 RX7

Was just having some second thoughts on purchasing this car and wanted to see if I could get some advice on what to do?

I don't care much that they have bad gas mileage I was more wondering a long the lines of reliability and repair costs how you guys would rate it for a college student? Is it a decent DD or more a weekend driver?

Really depends on the condition and how the P/O took care of the car. They can be fine one minute, then shit an apex seal the next, even if you are babying it.

Well here is some pics of the car in question for further help.

From the looks it was at least well maintained but one can never be sure.

    Thank you for the reply.

how much do you know about rotaries? they are amazing motors but you have to be very very careful about not overheating them. asn long as they're well taken care of they're great, but if you get one that has issues and you're in college it will probably be a LOOOOT of headaches.

Not much but I'm pretty willing to learn how to work on one. I have done some looking around and most people that talk about them say don't be intimidated by them as they are fairly simple as far as engines go.

The car I posted has a slight oil leak and that's it to my knowledge

Very simple motors, DO NOT baby them though, they are made to have the shit beat out of them, they aren't made to putt around and be driven nicely. That's why so many have issues. Pre mix it at the pump, do regular maintenance and then some and you're golden.

Pics don't show what condition the motor is in. Go take it for a test drive. Only then can you truly decide. The 12A motors are almost bulletproof, so mileage should not be too much of a concern.

You can come look at Mine this upcoming Sunday if you would like to. I've got two. The gold one is for sale as you know, you are interested in it, and the white one is my daily driver you can look at if you need a reference on 1984 and later models. In case you want to buy that red one. It looks to be in good shape, and while I would definitely like to sell you the gold car more, I say if it does well on the tiest drive, and the price isn't too much, it looks to be a good buy.

yeah if you buy it you've gotta beat on it. definitely good motors as long as you take care of them they're golden. my dad's had every generation and has loved them all.

    Quoted for truth.

I've had a lot of FB's. The 12A's are great motors, and only need regular maintenance. The cars are a lot of fun, although not the fastest cars out there.

As far as beating on it..make sure you let it warm up to operating temperature b4 you do so. I know you should do it for EVERY car, but its much more vital to do it with rotaries or you WILL shit an apex seal

Yes, at least 60% of normal operating temperatures. Unfortunately, this can take like 15 minutes on a cold day just before you leave the driveway.

The only issue I ever had with any of my 7's were apex seals. There was a reason for that though I will not get into as the one you're looking at is probably stock. Main thing is temperature and oil. Check your fluids often. Rotary motors will burn oil, just make sure it doesn't run low. Other than that they are great cars, and fun as hell.

1st gens are a lot of fun - they are light and easy to toss around.
