    Default Turbo manifold help

ok i bought a d series cast iron turbo manifold from a member off here, and i didnt notice until now that the waste gaste flange is on one cylinder.

Should i just buy a new manifold or is this ok for now?

Is the problem that you have an internally gated turbo and have a manifold that has a WG provision on the #1 runner? If so, just make a block-off plate for the WG provision on the manifold and you will be good to go! And be sure to make the block-off plate out of some metal that is at least semi-heavy, so it won't leak exhaust gases.

Well, Ideally you would want the wastegate to pull from all 4 cylinders instead of one cylinder getting more use than the others. People don't realize, but the wastegate also increases the volumetric efficiency of the engine, not just controls boost. A good wastegate and manifold combo is very important to the overall performance of the car.

yall are slow... he said its a cast iron manifold

its probably a log style or one of the other cast ones (below), there never usually is a big collector piece on cast iron manifolds...

its fine dude you can run it,

    it looks like this, right?:

tons of people use that style, of course its not the best out there, but it'll work... when the wastegate opens exhaust from ALL cyls will leave from the WG to avoid the turbo, the path of least resistance. you'll be fine.

^yes its exactly like that the wastegate flange is on cylinder 4, the far left.

Hmmm.... so the exhaust rather than going through the turbine wheel with big holes in between all the slots of the blades of the wheel, it is going to do a 180 DEGREE PLUS U-turn, disrupt the exhaust pulses and to exit from the wastegate. INTERESTING!! Man I guess I need to bone up on my fluid dynamics and go back to class. (End sarcasm)

Now I do realize that not all cylinders are firing at the same time, but I can tell you one cylinder will run with much better volumetric efficiency and could run lean and result in a blown piston, burnt valve, etc. Not only that, but it is going to KILL volumetric efficiency for the other 3 cylinders by having to take that path. At that point you would be better off blocking off that opening with a plate and getting a little bigger turbo with an internal wastegate.

Will it work, yeah probably. Is it a good design, not at all.

i think this is really the answer to his question. it will work, not the best, but for most it'll be fine. if i had the option of an external gate @ the collector, i would get that.

It worked for years on my GSR with a Drag kit...
