Definitely makes the car less girly![]()
the guy replaced the resonators with glasspacks and ran straight pipes all the back with no muffler. the resonators are secondary cats with no sensors so legally this can be done... and for around $200. there is not a bolt on exhaust kit for this car that is less than $1000. and those kits dont gain but 8-10hp at the most..... not worth it imo lol
It's highly unlikely you'll see any gains over the stock exhaust without tuning.Originally Posted by İhris
The resonators are nothing like a catalytic converter, they are just like mufflers but they bounce the sound waves off each other inside it to cancel the unwanted tones out...exactly the same way a flow master muffler works. Ordinary mufflers, like the glass packs, have insulation in it that absorbs the sound instead of just changing it.
Glass packs get louder with age as the insulation inside burns out, we used to soak them in water and run them so the material burned out near instantly lol. If you look inside a glass pack the holes are like a cheese grater, if you flip it there is less back pressure. In your video it sure sounds like he has them backwards so there's less back pressure or maybe they are just burned out.
Honestly I'd just run a high flow resonator and Magnaflow or Borla muffler. It will be plenty loud enough and the resonator will prevent the tinny sound typical of BMW's with low back pressure exhausts...
.... jason you are a walking textbook about cars lol reps for you bro!!!
he said that the glasspacks only had about 30mi on it when he did the video. he has 2 12" allied bluestreak glasspacks (which ive heard from the hotrod forums that these are the loudest ones there is) that replaces the 2 resonators near the front/middle of the car.... then just straight pipes out the back with custom tips.
not really sure .... here is the link to the thread where we are talking about it though....

ohhh 12" glasspacks! That explains the sound...they're really short lol! Yeah I'd run 2 of those in line or just use a longer one. It all depends how loud you want it!Originally Posted by İhris

i wouldnt mod that car for power unless its boost anyway. slow as hell from the factory. just have a catback made for a nice sound.
...... catbacks are $1000 and up with no performance gains. my Stock A/T z4 3.0i runs low 14sec 1/4mi ... and 0-60 in 5.2.... that isnt slow as hell. Its not fast but its not slow either.Originally Posted by ksniperfox
the problem is that the car is tuned so precise to factory spec that any boltons will not show any gains in performance what so ever.... only solution to gaining performance is SC or turbo which will run about $10000.
all i want is for the car to sound good and not spend a lot of money. im familar with mainstream. I have been on this site for almost 5 years and all the shops in atlanta are overpriced imo.
This car isnt my track car... its just a fun car thats my DD. $200 to make it sound like a race car is fine by me![]()
This is kinda interesting...
2000 Honda S2000 5.5 14.2
2003 Honda S2000 6.3 14.9 (Manual)
2004 Honda S2000 5.8 14.2 (MT Mar 04)
2003 BMW Z4 3.0i 5.4 14.2
2004 BMW Z4 3.0i 5.3 14.0 (C&D)
lol yeah i was gonna comment on that. How much power and torque does the 3.0 have?Originally Posted by İhris

Funny you'll support a country club (expensive) race track and justify the cost of membership, yet you won't even spend money on the most elemental power gains on a car (exhaust) and want to have some half ass rigged up exhaust on a BMW.
i think it sounds really good. you sound like you have your mind made up to do this. so go do it and dont worry if anyone else likes it. its your car and you will be the one hearing it all the time.

Chris,
That sounds like shit, just like any 6 cylinder BMW with glasspacks and straight pipes outside of a race track.
If you want everyone to compliment it then get B&B tri-flo. If you want to go fast then sell it and get an MZ4 because
C&D 0-60 in 4.6 1/4 in 13.1@107 and they can be had for $25,000 now.
u cant get power gains from boltons with my car... only way possible is to upgrade the ECU. im not turning my A/T BMW into a race car... i have other plance for that. Yes i plan on taking it to the track... yes i want to have some fun in it. No i do not see myself spending $1000+ to bolton a catback that gives me 4+ hp gains.Originally Posted by green91
The resonators that would be replaced work as SECONDARY cats... no sensors. its legal.... and i'll still pass emissions... do some research.
it does sound a little overkill but im wondering if thats due to the camera being in the garage.... there is a lot of echo.

All I know is that old man can't drive.
If you take the mufflers off and just do exactly what he did, it will be fairly loud.
what id i keep stock muffler on and just replace the resonators with the glasspacks?? i dont want SUPER loud but i do want it to growl.Originally Posted by simontibbett
shit i dunno what to do lol i wish i was a welder.
I would do that, keep stock mufflers and replace the resonators. Is there anyway you can test it before welding? As in is it in a place you could just use exhaust clamps and test it first?
i can see if Pauls custom exhaust can let me try different ideas out. if not there is a muffler shop accross the street from my house that does custom exhaust.
ohhh it's automatic?! DO NOT put an exhaust on it lol! If anything take off the stock muffler and put a Borla on. Loud exhausts do not belong on automatics outside of sub 10 second drag cars.Originally Posted by İhris

its an autotragic. i got it as just a DD, fun car to drive. i have had a manual for a LONG time and i figured i would be happier with an automatic for my drive back and forth to work.... i was wrong

Here, expect something of this nature with that set up...

well, i dont know which car and driver you got your facts for an AP1 from, but heres the one i found posted a 14.1 quarter and 0-60 5.4 :
http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...cs+page-2.html
i think your info is flawed, because the engines are the same from 2000-2003, and torque goes up in 2004, yet the quarter is slower.
i didnt wanna make this a car versus car thing. z4 is a badass car, but i dont see where 220 horsepower gets you into the low 14s/high 13s as someone said. best i could find for yours was a 14.39 and it wasnt from car and driver so i wont post the link. however the one i did find on car and driver also says 5.4 in a z4. here is that link:

sorry to get your thread off topic. positive reps have been given to you.
the exhaust doesnt sound all that bad, just my opinion, i just dont like it. maybe if he actually got a clip of some drive time or higher revs.
when i suggested a catback, i didnt imply a brand name one. a lot of IA sponsors/shops are probably more than capable of making you a custom one for FAR cheaper. FYI mainstream performance did one on one of my old cars for $300.(usually $350) when i had them do a large amount of work, they cut me a deal. they fabricated everything in house and installed it. cant beat that. but whatever you get im sure itll sound fine.
Just my .02 it doesnt soound good, sounds like my eclipse when it was open header. You can buy a muffler and have it custom for under $1000 easy. I have never bought a system, just the muffler and have it done by a shop. They charge way too much for the pipe in cat-back systems when you can goto a shop and have it done for half of that.
2007 Civic FA1 and 2005 Yukon XL Denali
The original video sounds far to loud for a DD, and the fact that it's an auto convertible really would mean the exhaust just doesn't make sense. A car in that trim doesn't need to sound like that, and your resale value would plummet as the target consumer for that vehicle wants a comfortable sporty convertible (sorry to sound mean but a Chick who just wants to look good is far more likely than a performance enthusiast). I think if you Did the "custom made" catback idea from a local muffler shop, and you had it made with flanges instead of a welded system. Then when the auto finally bores you to the point of wanting to sell it, you could switch back to stock. Then sell the custom exhaust separate on the bimmer forums.
^^ Yeah, I drew a frame of a man running on each fan blade. That is him running at idle
