i've heard that they are illegal if they never originally came on the vehicle. if anyone knows if there is any truth to this but would like to know as well.

Search for HID threads by nitro. Ull find all the answers ull ever need.
But technically they are illegal if the car didnt come with them.

Since the aftermarket kits do not offer height adjustment aiming(like OEM kits do) they are illegal.

I doubt you EVER get in trouble for it though. I have an 89 and 86 BMW and I ride with HIDs and have been for YEARS. When they were fairly new and never had a hassle.

That's not why. They ARE illegal because the beam pattern of HID's in a halogen housing is inconsistent and it supposedly blinds people.

I get blinded my car's that come stock with HID's so it's not a big deal at all, and you won't get stopped by the cops unless you get a funky color like bright blue or pink. Stick with 4000-8000k to be safe, but I think 10000k looks best. Also the lower the k# is, the more lumens the light puts out.

I have them in my car and HID's are prob one of my fav mods, it's cheap and makes your car look a lot better.

Oh really? Then why do many OEM's offer HIDs in non-projector housing? Like Merc...

Stick to 5K or 6K to realize the benefits of HID. At 8K and above and definitely in the 10K plus range you will start to fatigue your eyes on long drivers and the light output is extremely diminished.

Yes but the headlight is modified to spread the HID beam pattern in such a way that it doesn't cause glare. Trust me, go look it up, it's actually pretty technical so I'm not going into detail.

I have 8000k and I can see much better than my halogen lights. No matter what anyone says, any k of HID lights put out way more lumens than halogen lights. So get what you want, and the light output does get worse, but not by too much. I'm about to switch it up to 10000k

Super bright blue looks so mean...I might do it later today...hhmmmm

I had 6000k on my prelude, best mod I have ever done. Ill be getting some again soon from Nitro, I just cant keep a damn car long enough to get them. Next time I get them theyre staying with me and not going with the car.

I never got hassled with mine, and I got pulled over while I had them for a tail light being out, and he didnt say a word about the headlights. He was parked on the side of the road so he saw me coming.

IMO it is too hard for them to keep up with which cars come with them stock and which ones dont. Like on the cars that have it as a factory option for instance. You could get them from the factory, or you could get normal headlights from the factory then get aftermarket HID's and say they came from the factory. Too much for them to care about.

It actually starts to decrease output quite a bit as you get into the higher colors and it starts to look like 'ricer bulb' replacements. 6k has a nice touch of violet to it and still good output. I wouldn't go past that.

Started at 10k you are looking at eye fatigue on long night drives.

dont worry about a thing man. i had 3k's(yellow), which are pretty close to the brightest output you can make, and i still never had a cop say a thing to me. i even rode behind a few here and there for miles, and they still never pulled me over or anything.

I got pulled over by sandy springs police for them being to bright ,and blue ( I had 10k)
The ticket was $255 bucks, but when I went to court ,and tried to explain to the soliciter the similarities to higher end vehicles ,and he really didnt know what I was talking about. DISMISSED!!!

I switched to 6k,and aimed my lights down a little bit.
The 6k are nice ,but I plan on going to 5k soon.
    I like the stock look.

10k is just way to much color and not enough light. To be honest, while no info you find supports this, i was rocking 12k, switched to 10k, then took that shit out because i couldent see and ran over a 2x4. the 12 has the purple tint, but i see white light on the road when i drive at least.

It's all relative. I have 20/20 vision and when riding in my friend's sti with 10000k I can see great, and def way better than any halogen setup. It's true my 8000k's are brighter, but the 10000k looks so much better. It's all about how you want to customize your car.

And 12000 puts out less lumens than 10000k....

And I drive with glasses that make me close to 20/20. The bright colors still cause eye fatigue and put out less light every step you go up...

5k and 6k have the most output and it is OBVIOUS you are running HIDs and not just bulbs. So why run super crazy colors?

to be different. Most cars have halogen lights. Even less cars have HID's. And even less have bright BLUE HID's. But like I said, it's all about how you want to customize your car. I personally did the HID setup ion my car origianally for looks, but the best thing about them is how much they greatly increase vision.

Nah, I usually don't come out to local meets, no offense to anyone, but being one of the few maxima's around, it's not fun going to a meet where I can't relate to anyone. Because personally, I could care less about anything other than a nissan, vw, bmw, or porsche...

The sonic meets are ok, and the varsity is nice. But it's also too cold to be stading around outside.

Maxima meets are the best, all talk is generally about vq series engine, and nissan! And maxima enthusiasts are actually nice and friendly. And the person who has the baddest maxima is a girl haha. Funny...jessalba has a full cattman axhaust I think on her maxima and it is the nicest sounding thing ever!!!! I thought mine sounded nice but hers sounds so mean!

I have 6k hid's from nitro and I love them. they make everything look more crisp while driving at night because of the "diamond white" color of the light.

There is more to the color temp issue than absolute lumen output. There is also the sensitivity of the human eye to different color temps. As it happens, we are much less sensitive to light in the blue end of the spectrum (8k and up). So, even if a 5k was run side by side with a 10k, and they had the same absolute lumen output, you would STILL see less with the 10k bulb.
Blue bulbs look cool to those coming down the road at you, but if you really want to see where you're going, stick to 4300k to 5k. BTW, I'm running 5k plug-n-plays, and gave 'em their first test run last night...best mod EVER!

No more blue HIDS for me. Almost cost me 1100$ fine (that was the minimum) Barley squezzed by that fine. Had to go to court and this was my 2nd traffic ticket ever, only ever had 1 speeding ticket. Luckily the Rep was cool and she got me off. Cop also said he could of towed my car on the spot... Like i said no more Blue HID's for me

Their output is way stronger and doesnt scatter like just sticking it in the housing. Their colors usually are concentrated but then again they look way better.

Then there's the factor no one really knows how to do retro, HID is the only way.

Depends on what you swap it into and the quality of the retro. Put in a crap projector and what is the point? My m3 has projectors but my e28 has e-code headlamps which has very similar projector style output. No need to retro.

You will get some refraction off the projector and it will alter the color a little at different angles. Bright purple is still going to be bright people.

There are plenty of people that know how to do it and know how to do right. Just have to know where to look
