if you slam it into gear and let it grind until it catches, yes.

if you do it the right way, no.

haha yeah, i would say thats bad. mine makes a sh*t ton of noise when i let off the gas while im in gear. at least i think thats what the noise is...

all you do is pull the trans out of gear as you let off the gas and the gearbox unloads, and gently hold a LITTLE bit of pressure on the shifter and when the rpms match it will just fall into gear. its pretty cool. you can downshift like this too but i dont usually.

In the Miata, that's probably gear lash, and there's nothing you can do about it. It's faint when the car has full interior, but take the carpet out and it gets loud. Put a lightweight flywheel in it and it'll be almost unbearable. I replaced two transmissions, throwout and pilot bearings, and tried different tranny fluids before finding an article about the real cause of the noise. In the end I had to put a loud as hell exhaust on my previous Miata so I couldn't hear the damn tranny clattering.

    i was thinking that too...

mines pretty loud, even with the full interior. the only time its "faint" (depends on your definition of faint i guess lol) is with the top down.

I did it in my dads camaro a few times! Oh and he taught me how to drive a semi truck, and once you get going you shift without the use of a clutch.

I can, but haven't in a long time, so I'd probably grind the first 5-10 times I did it. My Audi's Trans is too expensive for me to do anything besides baby it at the moment, learned how to do it in a Miata actually. I probably COULD NOT do it at race-speeds though, I'd need alot of practice at speed to do it.

is this in some type of race car? ...or the daily driving style.

the proper way with a race car would be a dog box with a delay box and strain gauge.

    Ride with droptopdrifter some time

It is bad on the synchro's, any time you aren't rev matching and seamlessly changing gears it is prematurely wearing parts out.

I commuted from Gainesville to Buckhead for 5 days without a clutch in my Integra, only using the pedal to start off if i got caught at a light...that was an entertaining week!

Even more exciting was a 8am commute from Gwinnett to the other side of Smyrna with with NO brakes...I didn't have anyone to help me bleed them after replacing a couple brake lines but had to get to work lol.

the smoothest iv ever done it was in my friends 97 cellica. dono why but it went into every gear perfect.

i do it in the teg sometimes, mainly just to show someone that its possible.

downshifting though i have to rev it up in neutral to match the revs then it will drop in...i think thats how its done anyway isnt it?

I do it going all the way up and back down the gears. If you match your RPM'S with your wheel speed, you will only need to use the clutch when you take off from a stop. That what we Truckers refer to as "Floating Gears".

Let's say you're in the middle of an endurance road race, or even just going to work, and your clutch master or slave cylinder go out. Do you call AAA for a tow or continue driving?

You can start/launch a car off with no clutch, it's hard on the starter but it's more than possible...the rest of the gears are easy.

well what if your cable breaks?

and the clutch is there to get you rolling. if you dont have to use it between gears, why use it? its not like it hurts the car unless you suck d1ck and grind all the time

If shifting like that doesnt hurt your car why did they create a clutch again.

I still say it sounds dumb. How many people do you know who've had the clutch just plain stop working. I'll practice clutchless shifting WHEN that happens, until then, my clutch works fine, and you should already rev match speeds anyway, so use the clutch.

actually, it happened to me in panama city on spring break. my slave completely went out and i had to keep the reservior topped off and pump the clutch to build up enough pressure to get it into first, and then floated all the gears after that.
