I think the reason behind placing the mirrors on the fenders of the cars was for visibility. It's easier to check a mirror those mirrors because they are placed directly in the driver's field of vision when in forward motion. Mirrors mounted on the doors, like most late model cars, the driver has to turn his/her head at the worst and shift his/her vision away from the road at the least to check for anything in those mirrors.Originally Posted by bigdom

Since the distance between the driver eyes and the mirrors is greater the effect of objects in the mirror being closer than they appear is worsened. Not that it matters...
