    Default Mazdaspeed3 too powerful?

    http://www.thetorquereport.com/2007/...t_so.html#more

Well apparently not everyone is happy with the power of the Mazda Mazdaspeed 3. According to Mark Phelan of the Detroit Free Press, the car has too much power that it inhibits the overall driveability of the car.

"Mazda left the 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 performance compact on the burner too long."

The Mazdaspeed 3 is a turbocharged 263 horsepower version of the popular Mazda 3. Its main competition is the VW GTI and Honda Civic Si.

The regular versions of the Mazda 3 (sedan and five-door) have been a great success for the automaker since they were introduced. The Mazda consistently remains at the top of its class. Well according to Phelan, the Mazdaspeed version misses the mark. Compared to the GTI and Civic Si, the car falls short in the handling department.
    Is this guy really serious?

too much power in a FWD car can cause hella understeer/torque steer during hard cornering, which is probably what this man is talking about.

compared to the new Civic Si that's NA and has a pretty well-balanced suspension, I'd have to agree with the comparison.

granted, you can never have too much hp going in a straight line.

Throttle control is a wonderful thing. Isn't the MS3 chassis even stronger than the regular Mazda3? They used to b*tch about the torque steer in the Sentra Spec-V when it first came out too. To much power? Boo f*cking hoo.

All the MAJOR auto magazines said the torque steer and under steer was not that bad. I guess they know how to drive.

I've read that too in Car & Driver, and it actually outperformed the cars in the comparo (I forgot the cars that were tested)

Guess it's all dependent on the driver

From what I've read, they actually cut the boost within so many degrees of steering angle to reduce torque steer. He's probly one of those same guys on there who thanks that the Prius is the ultimate performance car.

I wonder if this is true?
If that is true.. with a couple of mods.. the SI might shock it

Just did some research.. No wonder... The stock Speed 3 put down 216/243 torqe... the SI put down 180/143tq...

Huge loss in power from the speed 3 compare to the SI though.. % wise.

Nice find, but one thing about most mazdas is this.... No cool air going down the road, ECU kills the shit out of timing. If you were to look at the A/F ratio, I garunteed it would drop well below 10:1. I bet when they tested it, it was during the middle of the day. I think Sport Compact car did a baseline dyno run on a stock '06 Miata. during the day when it was nice and warm, it could only put down 133whp. They didn't know why. They tested it again later in the evening, and due to the cooler temps, it put down like 145ish whp. I even had that problem on my old 4 banger. My A/F dropped to 9.6:1 and I only made 106 whp/128wtq, and it was real humid in the shop. I don't know what it would've made if the A/F were the way it were, but it would've been alot better. Besides, how many times have you heard of an almost 3200lbs car running a 14.0 flat with 215whp?

Just like my car it needs MAJOR tuning.
No one knows the limits of the MS6 and the MS3 yet. The Piggy back ECU's are just about to be released and Cobb is working on their solution for the cars. Don't care what that article says once these cars are modded and Tune'd there will be a big surprise in store for people.

I had a MS3 for about 6 months. Fun little car. I can see what they are saying about being overpowered to an extent. Yeah, if not carefull the torque steer, can really jump out and get ya. Hard shift in a curve, and it will jump quite a bit. But be a little smarter on the corners and will be fine.

And as far as the tuners, back when i had it they were saying the cobb tuner would be out. Sounds like its still not here, from what i read above. Wow.

The GTI is good how it is, and if you want more power a $500 ecu flash will get you past a MS3 real fast.
