    Default New to boost world

I recently purchased a New STi so far loving it. My ? is can anyone give me any ideas on what a good catback and intake would be for it. Also if anyone knows roughly what Hp increase they may make. As far as sound on the exaust i like to hear it and for others to really wounder just what might be under the hood. ( just for an idea on the sound )

Also i didnt get the boost gauge from factory cause of the position. So would like some info on a Boost controller. Maybe if anyone knows one that reads boost and exhaust temp. That way i can do with out the gauges and pods. Just not sure if one is out there.

Ive did some searching just most of the stuff i run across im not sure about. If there is something better please feel free to let me know. Also im not looking to make a bunch of mods for great HP increase. Just want to spend my money correctly. Looking to put around 1000 to 1500 in soon.

Things ive looked at and/or concidering
    Controller's
    Apex AVC-R
    HKS EVC
    Exhaust
    Greddy EVO2 or SP2
    Apex N1
    Intakes
    Injen Cold air
    Aem cold air

    Bov
    TurboXS RFL
Greddy type S ( think thats right)

a catback really won't getcha much. a turboback is much better since most of the gains to be found will come from a better downpipe.

intakes on wrx/sti's are virtually worthless. the stock intake is good to about 350 hp so don't waste your money.

boost controllers...no no. get yourself either a cobb accessport or an ecutek tune from scott at SOG. he's the in house tuner there and is awesome. real engine management is worlsd better than boost controllers.

forget the BOV, unless you just want to show off, possibly stain your rear bumper, and have a rough idle.

Ok so i looked up the accessport info and ecutek thats for tuning the ecu. I was reffering to a in car visible boost gauge and exshaust temp gauge. Maybe one built into a boost controller to have all in one display. I Know they make for other apps. But wasnt sure if there was one that i could use, so that i could do away with a gauge pod.

And for the BOV yea that would be just for show and sound i know doesnt make it faster.

I thought about going the DP route but wasnt sure how much more it might cause me to have to do besides tuning. like injectors etc. Dont want to jump into alot of mods at once you know...

Figured i could cat-back and intake without any extra mods or major tuning needed. But if i can Dp without having to go straight to the shop to be tuned id do that aswell. Just not sure when ill be able to get it in the shop with the funds and all.

If you're still on the fence about a BOV

The Turbonetics Raptor valve sounds the best IMO, nice and quiet.
There is also a company called Syntronic, they make a nice one that just sounds like a whoosing noise.

As far as exhaust, the TurboXS cat back is nice....very rumbly bumbly.

with a full turbo exhaust, and a tune <i have an cobb accessport for sale, lmk if your interested> you will be at roughly 300whp and a lil over 300wftlbs of torque. a turboback vs a catback will only cost a hundred or so more so its not much, and you will not need to do injectors etc. a blowoff valve is not a good idea on these cars, recirc is better. stay stock, put a short ram intake and the sound you want will be there. as far as gauges go, i would reccomend either the dash pod with defi gauges that will match factory color exact, or a apexi boost gauge which can be mounted anywhere without a pod. lmk if you have any other questions.

because you run rich just for a moment between shifts, the leftover unburned fuel ends up on your rear bumper

on your budget i'd go this route

    1st- cobb AP v.2
2- bellmouth downpipe to stock exhaust..or full exhaust if within the budget
    3- flash stage 1 or 2 map.
    4- sway bars

    Correct about the bumper stains...

I run a HKS SSQ BOV and I love it... It does stain the bumper but I don't have any idle problems. Some people do, some people don't.

DON'T get an intake... Just take off the "snorkus". It will get you the same sound and you won't waste your money. You might even loose power going to an aftermarket intake without a tune...

As for exhaust I run a Blitz Nur Spec-R with an inexpensive bellmouth DP. It is LOUD but sounds AWESOME. Someone on here described it as sounding like "A dragon eating children" if i remember correctly. *FYI* it does set alarms off in parking lots at idle :-D

FOr engine management GO WITH COBB!!!! You WILL be happy. They have a new model out that has some neat features but if you're trying to stay in a budget just buy a used one, but make SURE it has been divorced from it's previous owners car...

You might wana go check out wrxatlanta.com for all of your wrx specific needs...

I've done TONS of research and reading so let me know if you have any questions...

Ok first off thanks for all the info and posts on topic.
If ive read correct ill go with
    Turbo-back exhaust
    cobb accessport
And remove snorkus ????????? not sure what to do there so maybe some detail on that
gauge pods or apex boost gauge
    then flash/tune
that should be within a 1500.00 start correct

    great info in here.

Ive got a Accessport Flashed to Stage II and I bought a GFB Hyrbrid 50/50 valve, and I love it. No idle issues, no leaks.

Go with a full turbo back (up pipe isnt needed since you have an Sti), flash to stage II, keep the snorkus or obtain a GPMoto elbow. The stock intake is a "cold-air" but not a traditional one in the sense of the words.

Yea after some reading on Cobb think im diffently going this route. If ive missed something let me know:
    Stage 2 Power Package
    SF Intake System (Short Ram)
    Lightweight Main Pulley
    Urethane Exhaust Hanger
    http://www.cobbtuning.com/categories/?id=2219

If anyone has anything i can use from this setup please let me know in the next week.
Also done some reading on the Defi gauges they are sweet so guess i need a pod if someone has one for sell. Gauges: boost/exh. temp/ ??

The Cobb off the shelf maps do require you to have a stock airbox. technically you can run an aftermarket intake , but its basically at your own risk.

Defi Gauges arent worth the money in my opinion. Ive had them before and sold them to get some money for other more important things.

Check out www.prosportgauges.com. They have a new line of gauges including Peak gauges and they dont require a controller like defis. They are also brighter. Ive got these gauges and honestly I like them more than I did my DEFI's.

A good rule of thumb for gauges if you get three is Boost (if you dont want your stock), EGT, and Oil Press. EGT gauges are cool, but if I was you I would get a widebang gauge setup. Either PLX/ AEM/ or Innovate Motorsports would be fine.

well id reccomend getting a boost controler. if you want a nice sounding bov go for it... thers no horsepower there though
take your freaking radiator fan off... not the electric one... the crank one... if your car has one. thats good for about a donkey. =D
but you will want a good 2.5 inch - 3 inch TURBO back exhaust. and if you upgrade your turbo youre going to want good headers and a wastegate.
buy this book on amazon and read it
it will save you tons of time searching for answers
and probably save you some money too
